Quilt Show Wrap-Up

Another show has come and gone. The quilts are down, the vendors have gone home, and I am happy to report that once again we hosted a stellar event. We had so many wonderful compliments on the quality of the show. The way it was organized, the beautiful quilts, the way they were displayed, the wonderful boutique, the delicious food, the warm and friendly attitude of our volunteers and the fabulous merchant mall (although there was a lot of whining about empty pocketbooks on that last one!)

People kept telling me what a wonderful job I had done but in fact it was my team who did a wonderful job. All of them worked tirelessly to ensure that every job was done, every detail taken care of and they did it with enthusiasm and good humour. I cannot thank them enough for their participation and their support of our guild.

We could not put this show on without the volunteers that show up for their shifts every day ready and willing to greet the public and represent our guild. A big thank you goes out from our committee to all of the members who volunteered at the show.

Of course the other hugely important contribution was the quilts that you so lovingly made. The viewing public were in awe of the artistry and skill on display in the gallery.

A list of Viewers Choice Ribbon and Quilt Show Committee Ribbon winners is included in this newsletter and by now should be posted on our website along with a smilebox of all the quilts that were hung in the show.

From a financial perspective we did not make as much money as we did in 2010 but according to my treasurer Rebecca we have a profit of approximately $1500 so we have a bit of starting capital for the next show. A full financial report will be forwarded to Betty before the end of the month and the books will be closed on another Album of Quilts.

Thank you again for your participation.

Quilt Show Committee Ribbon Winners

A word about Quilt Show Committee Ribbons: When our committee first gathered Krista put forth the idea that we could each make a ribbon for an aspect of quilting that was for one reason or another special to us and award that ribbon to the quilt in the show that, in our opinion, best represented our ribbon. We hope that the winners enjoy having the ribbons as much as we enjoyed creating them and choosing which quilt to award them to.

SIGN FRAMES If you have a metal frame for our lawn signs hiding in your house/garage/basement please bring it to the JUNE meeting. The number we had available this year was much smaller than it needed to be so before we have to order 500 more (minimum order) we would like to know how many we really have!

GLOVES Our stock of gloves is much smaller post show than it was pre show. If you found a glove in your pocket when you got home please return it at the JUNE meeting.

RIBBON WINNERS Please bring your quilts to the JUNE meeting. This is for ALL ribbon winners – Viewers Choice, Committee Ribbons and Challenge Ribbons.

Thanks!

Membership Report

A few changes to Membership… membership does have it’s benefits; networking with other quilters, a great place for meetings, wonderful speakers and a library full of books. But membership also has it’s price… did you know that approximately 90% of the fee covers our meeting hall, insurance, and storage. The other 10% helps to subsidize all the other things going on in our guild. In the past we have always used the honor system, that those who attend our meetings are members or first time guests; however, this is not always the case. Starting at the September meeting members will be required to sign in at the membership desk. You will also need your membership card, as it has your number on it (I will have a list of members and their numbers if you can’t find your card or forget to bring it). This is no different than showing your card at Costco.

We are also changing the door prize draws. Numbers will be drawn instead of names. The numbers will correspond to the sign in list. You will still need to be wearing your name tag to win the door prize. With regards to name tags, the fee for name tags at the membership table will be $1.00 starting at the September meeting. This is to encourage you to make a wonderful name tag that you are proud to wear at the meetings. It is also to encourage you to remember to bring your name tag. A helpful hint…. put it in your purse… you always bring your purse! To date we have 146 members in our guild. The registration fee as of the June meeting will be $50 for the year.

From the President

I love Show and Tell. And this month is probably my most favourite month for Show and Tell because we see so many, wonderful quilts that our Community Quilts Committee has helped organize and bring to a wonderful fruition. I like that word “fruition” so I looked it up in the dictionary. The first definition is “the bearing of fruit” (I could have figured that out for myself). But none the less, that makes sense. The Community Quilts Committee are like gardeners. They have bought the seeds (fabric and patterns), planted them (set time aside, rented the Hall and organized the storage locker for the supplies), and asked that guild members help nourish those little seeds (with the help of sewing machines, time and energy). Wow, and those little seeds have grown into spectacular flowers (quilts). And we must not forget that this is always a year’s long project and we can submit finished or partially finished quilts to the Community Quilts Committee and they will find a home for them. I love Community Quilts Show and Tell.

Speaking of quilts and labours of love, we will be able to see the Quilt Show Challenge Quilts this month. They will be hung for easy viewing so come a little early and take some time to really enjoy them.

I attended a Guild Gathering meeting in Delta on April 28th along with Anita JonesGould(workshops) and JoAnn Lee(programs) and I will say more about that meeting in another newsletter. I can report that it was fun exchanging ideas with about 30 other people from other guilds in the lower mainland. Minutes were taken at the meeting and I hope to receive them soon. So stay tuned.

For those members who attended the February Quilt Retreat this year we have some reimbursement money for you. Apparently, Edenvale overcharged us and so there is some cash for you at the Workshop table. Now, when you get that cash remember what Dianne Ritter, our Quilt Show Co-ordinator, said at the last meeting. She told us to save all our pennies and bills so that we can shop till we drop at the Quilt Show.

Quilt Show! Quilt Show! Quilt Show! – Yikes, Quilt Show is almost here! The committee is in full swing now and most of us are busy sewing and quilting, selling raffle tickets, talking to our friends and relatives about the Show, and saving our money so that we can fully enjoy the boutique and the merchants mall. Please read this newsletter carefully for any last minute information about the Quilt Show and important dates to mark on your calendars. I am looking forward to putting my sign on my lawn on Friday the 25th of May. I overheard some members saying that they have put some advertising posters in their car. I think I must do that also. Our website has a poster for printing and also a list of the Merchant’s Mall Vendors under the Quilt Show heading. Advertising our Show is very important so if we all do our part the entire North Shore (and perhaps the whole lower mainland) will know and attend our Show and they will all be flabbergasted at the awesomeness of our quilts. And we might even get ourselves a few new members. They are out there looking for us.

Good luck and Happy Quilting,
Betty

Quilt Show Is Almost Here!

One month from the time I am writing this we will be in the midst of quilt drop off – how are your show quilts coming? I wish I could say mine are complete but I still have time right?! Just a few reminders for you:

  • Quilt drop off is on June 6th at Delbrook Rec Center on West Queens Road from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. We will take quilts at the first entry door to the gym.
  • If you need to pull one of your quilts from the show please call Elaine Fjoser and tell her as soon as possible.
  • Vicki still has 18 spots to fill to cover all of the shifts in the different areas. If you have not yet volunteered please call Vicki and let her know when you are available. Our show is not possible without your support so please volunteer for at least two, two hour shifts.
  • Quilt pick up is on June 9th from 6 to 7 PM. You MUST have the slip given to you at drop off in order to pick up your quilt. If you are unable to retrieve your quilt please have a friend do it for you. We do not want to take them home with us.
  • Challenge quilts will also be available for pick up at the same time. Again you do need the purple slip you were given in order to retrieve your quilt. Challenge Quilts will be shown at the May meeting but will be retained and hung in the show. They will not be returned to you at the May meeting.
  • Boutique items can be dropped off on June 6th from 6:30 to 8:00 PM at the far gym doorway. Please make sure that all of your items are marked with your initials and the price and be sure to include an inventory sheet. Pick up time on the 9th for boutique items is the same as for quilts.
  • ARE YOU SELLING QUILTS IN THE BOUTIQUE? If so please let Krista know how many and what size. This will help her plan for display. Thanks!
  • If you have loaned items for the education display they will be available at the same entrance as the boutique items.
  • Remember your quilt must have a sleeve securely attached to the back of it.

I know we will have a wonderful show because of the calibre of the work I see every month at show and tell. Our show is our time to shine so please remember to enjoy yourself and take in the beauty our members have created.

Now I am off to work on my quilts!!

Happy Quilting!
Dianne

Program: “Together” Slide Show

Did you ever think that quilting should be considered an art? Vivian Kapusta will be doing a slide show presentation for the “Together” show that was in La Conner. Fibre artists worked with artists in another art medium, they chose their theme and worked to interpret that theme. Side-by-side they displayed their work. The results were amazing.

I was upset to miss the Together Show and am thrilled that Vivian is willing to share her presentation with us.

Also at our May meeting: Please sign up for our Hallowe’en potholder swap. We had so much fun doing swaps last year that we thought we’d try one more.

We’re asking people to sign up for the swap in May for the small participation fee of $2. In June, we’ll hand out to all those who signed up a set of guildelines for the swap as well as the insulated batting required for the potholders. The potholders are to be ready for swapping at the September meeting where we will also have a draw from the names of people who finished their potholders for the money left over from the participation fee collected, if any, after purchasing the batting. I already have my Hallowe’en fabric picked out for my swap partner…whoever he or she may be. See you on the 22nd!

Andrea & Your Program Committee

Library: Stained Glass, Continuous Line Quilting, and Inspirations

We’ve added several new titles to the library:

Do you have suggestions? Let Margo Novak, librarian@lionsgatequiltersguild.com, know. Whatever your interests – DVDs and books on art quilts, quilt design, photo quilts, thread painting, traditional blocks – the library is for you, and we want to focus on your interests.

Just a reminder: all library books are due at the June meeting. Summer is inventory time, and it can’t happen if the books aren’t there.

Workshop: Stars on Your Table (Carol Piercy)

Stars, nine patch, half square triangles, square in a square – this one has it all! A combination of basic quilt blocks results in a stunning seasonal table runner – or non-seasonal, the choice is yours. Carol hasn’t taught this course for years, but has been asked to do it again since it received rave reviews at the Christmas Show and Tell. It will mostly be together in a day.

DATE: Saturday, October 13th, 2012
TIME: 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
PLACE: St. Agnes Church, 530 East 13th, North Vancouver
COST: $50.00 (includes $10.00 pattern fee)

Membership Report

Summertime is just around the corner… actually it’s not long after the Quilt Show! Have you been working hard to get that last stitch in the binding; putting your labels on; and don’t forget the hanging sleeve. Not sure how something is done? Ask your fellow members, we are all a great resource for one another.

To date we have 143 members in our guild. Do you know someone who is interested in quilting, and would like to join us? Bring them along to a meeting, the first visit is free. After that there is a $5 drop in fee payable at the membership desk…. but a membership is $50 for a year, and has its benefits. Please remember that the prorated rate is for New Members only. (Membership is $70 until after the Quilt show)

To be a door prize winner, be sure to be wearing your nametag at the meeting. All of your names are in the draw bag; they are entered automatically when you renew your membership.

Membership Coordinator

From the President

Welcome to Spring Everyone. I know it is coming because I took the liner out of my winter jacket today and the daffodils are in full bloom. It must be difficult for you gardeners out there to stay in your sewing rooms but you MUST because our quilt show is just one short month away plus a couple of weeks. That is all the time you have. Really!!!! And then don’t forget after the quilt is finished you have to put the proper sleeve on it and make sure you identify it as yours so the return system works its finest.

We had a very nice turnout of members at the March meeting and our program with Dougal Ann Walker was great. The “goodie” table was loaded with assorted sweets. “Happy Birthday” to those of you who had birthdays in March and thank you for letting us celebrate with you. The business portion of the meeting went quickly and our Show and Tell was not large in number but the quality was outstanding as always. So, we had time for a very healthy break of a total of 25 minutes. There was much activity during those minutes: quilt photos and registration for the Quilt Show, our wonderful raffle quilt tickets were being sold, 50/50 lottery was very busy, “Freckles” patterns were being bought, library books were being signed out and then we had a cup of tea with a “goodie” while we took a closer look at the Show and Tell projects.

We had a bit of an “elephant” theme in March at our Show and Tell. I fell in love with the back end of a beautiful, big elephant and then there were colourful elephants in one of Carol Piercy’s quilts. I asked a few people who was it that created the large elephant quilt and Katherine Morgan said she was just too busy looking at the elephant to hear who made it. I think I, also, was so much enraptured by the subject of that quilt that I saw and heard nothing but that quilt. I have to remind myself to take time to look at the quilts closely and listen to the presenters who are showing them. Show and Tell quilts are inspirational, a source of wonderful ideas and a sheer pleasure to look at. Thank you to all those who do share with the guild. Sometimes it can be a little scary to show your work.

At the last Executive meeting we discussed the topic of guests to guild meetings. If you see someone who looks lost and not sure what is happening approach them, they won’t bite. It can be rather intimidating for someone to come into our hall of a hundred or so people and make themselves right at home. They might need a little help with that. Some guests may need to be directed to the membership table and taken under wing. Perhaps you could stay with them and even sit with them, offer them a cup of tea and make conversation. After all, you know they are good people, they are quilters!!

A friend just emailed me and was so happy that one of her pets was recovering and feeling healthy again that she was going to “sew herself into a thread induced stupor for the next month”. I wish all of you a “thread induced stupor” over the next few weeks as you complete those Show Quilts and don’t forget about the Community Quilts. The Community Quilts will be displayed during our May meeting. But, while you are sewing these project don’t forget to have fun, don’t ever forget to have FUN!!

Happy Quilting.
Betty

Quilt Show Update

Registrations – we have something on the order of 215 quilts registered for the show. Well done ladies and gentlemen!! If you are anything like me all that remains is to actually finish them in time for the drop on June 6th!!!

Publicity – Gaye McCance is working hard at advertising our show and will need volunteers for a variety of jobs. Please call Gaye or see her at the next meeting if you are able to assist. We will have lawn signs available starting at the April meeting. Lawn signs are our very best form of advertising so if you and/or someone you know has a front lawn/hedge/fence, particularly if it is located on a well-traveled road, that can accommodate a lawn sign please be sure to pick one up and on Saturday the 26th of May set it out so that passing motorists can see it. We also have posters that can be added to message boards or displayed in store windows so if you have a location that you think would be highly visible contact Gaye.

Volunteers – if you haven’t already submitted your volunteer form they are on the website. There are lots of jobs both big and small so let Vicky know what your availability is and she will find a spot that works for you.

Boutique – Krista and Marsha hope that you are busy sewing, knitting, and crafting lots of fabulous items for our boutique. Sometimes pricing can be a challenge; if you are having a hard time valuing your work, have a look at http://www.etsy.com/. This is an online marketplace for handmade items. Simply search for items similar to what you are making and see what others are selling them for.

Education – Jo Ann is looking for assistance with Education. Please give her a call or see her at the April meeting.

Quilt Drop Off & Pick Up – Quilt drop off will take place on June 6th at Delbrook Rec Center. Hours will be announced in the May newsletter and at the May Meeting.

Quilt Show Quiz for Kids – We need a volunteer to create the quilt show quiz. This involves touring the show on Thursday then creating the quiz and getting copies printed for show opening on Friday morning. Talk to Carol Piercy if you are interested.

Merchants – There will be a list of the merchants who will be at the show on our guild website. So get ready to shop, shop, shop!!

Let’s go finish those show quilts!!

Happy Quilting!
Dianne
