Raffle Quilts for the 2012 Quilt Show

The raffle quilts are complete and look super!

For the March meeting there will be raffle tickets for all of us to buy so we can sell them to our family and friends. We will also have pictures of the quilts and pictures on the website.

As we discussed and agreed at the February meeting, the tickets will be packaged 15 in a pack and will cost $25. All of the tickets must be sold at 3 for $5. As we have done previously, the members buy the books of tickets up front for $25, sell the tickets (this money is yours) and return the stubs for the draw. We keep track of member names with the ticket packs to be sure the stubs all get returned for the big draw at the end of the show.

In case you were not at the meeting, the BC Gaming people have become strict about accounting for all ticket sales at each price. They require us to print one series of tickets selling for $2 each and another for the 3 for $5 and keep track of the sales separately. It is much more straight forward to sell the 3 for $5 packs within our guild than to try to mix and match the different series. We will print a small number of $2 tickets to sell at the guilds we visit and at the show. From our previous raffle experience we found the majority of people bought the 3 for $5 tickets within the guild and also at other guilds and at the show. We can see what the demand is for the $2 tickets and decide if it is even worthwhile printing any for next time around.

We need volunteers to help sell our raffle tickets at other guild meetings in April and May. It is interesting to attend the meeting of another guild and we always get a friendly welcome. We also need people to help sell tickets at Lions Gate Hospital in May. There will be a sign-up list at the next meeting.

See you at the March meeting!

Boutique

There are a few months remaining before our big show – plenty of time to create some lovely items for the Boutique. Bust your stash…make a few bucks… buy new fabric to fill out your shelves again! Many visitors come to our show looking forward to purchasing quality handmade items from our members Boutique, so we hope many of you are sewing up a storm. The boutique needs plenty of items to entice shoppers with pretty displays. We’ve already made some suggestions and pointed you in the direction of free online tutorials, but here are a few more ideas: knitted baby items, Baby toys, bibs & quilts, hand-crafted jewelry, pottery, soaps, pillow cases, aprons, purses/wallets, pot holders, dish towels, tea towels, pin cushions, thread catchers, table runners/toppers, placemats, quilted wall hangings, tea cozies, greeting cards, Christmas ornaments. We cannot accept food items, including preserves.

Inventory sheets and a list of guidelines for submitting items for sale are available in the Show section of the website. Please read the guidelines carefully for information on how to label and price your items for sale. All boutique items must be delivered to Delbrook Community Centre during quilt drop off times. Items will not be accepted during the show.

Membership Report

Blooming everywhere! Spring flowers that is! They are blooming everywhere, between the cracks in the sidewalk, in the garden, in the lawn. Crocuses, daffodils, and soon tulips. The colours of spring are very inspirational, they can even inspire quilts. So how does your garden grow?

Speaking of growing, our membership renewals have been growing as well. To date we have 138 members in our guild. Do you know someone who is interested in quilting, and would like to join us? Bring them along to a meeting, the first visit is free. After that there is a $5 drop in fee payable at the membership desk…. but a membership is $50 for a year, and has its benefits.

To be a door prize winner, be sure to be wearing your name tag at the meeting. All of your names are in the draw bag; they are entered automatically when you renew your membership.

Community Quilts

Thank you for all the efforts you gave to the Community Quilts Workshop. The committee was so pleased to see the great attendance and enthusiasm from you. Some were able to give the whole 3 days which included the set up and preparation day and others came for 1 or 2 days. Some of those who were not able to stay came to pick up something to take home. Most who stayed also took something to work on at home. It was a fun time and some of our new members participated and got to know others in the Guild.

About half of the quilts that we will need to distribute were completed and from the feedback we were hearing the other half will be done in time for the Spring distribution. We also have kits prepared for giving out during the year as well as many quilts layered for quilting. Thank you again for the great support you gave to Community Quilts.

Library News

Hello, Fellow Guilders!

I am pleased to takeover as your new librarian for the next two years and look forward to meeting more Guild members. Many thanks to Cathy Jamieson for the great work she and her colleague Pamela Pellegrini did in maintaining and expanding our collection. It is in great shape and well organized.

I want to especially thank Cathy for her encouragement and ongoing support, however, she tells me that running the Library is a job for more than one person! So here is my plea for your help! I would be most grateful if someone would be willing to step forward and assist me on an ongoing basis – if you love quilting books, here is your opportunity to select what goes into our collection!

As well, I will need some additional help with setting up, loaning out books, etc. at each Guild meeting, so if you would like to help out on an occasional it would be most appreciated.

I look forward to hearing from you!

March COPS Day & Cathedral Window Demo

COPS Day for March is coming quickly … March 10 @ St. Catherine’s Church (1058 Ridgewood Dr.), 9:30-4:30. Judith Pilley has kindly offered to demonstrate her Cathedral Windows quilt work; she will guide you through the creation of a small sampler. Judith writes:

“This is a very old fashioned and traditional design that looks a lot harder that it really is. Piecing of the blocks can be done by assembly line style on your machine and set aside for hand sewing at your leisure. It can become a very portable on the go project for those who love to hand sew.”

If you wish to participate, you’ll need:

  • Your sewing machine
  • Thread to match your background fabric
  • Hand quilting needle and thimble
  • 16 7” squares of background fabric – traditionally a muslin
  • 24 2” squares of assorted coordinated fabrics for the windows

As always, the price of admission is a sweet or savory dish to share, and $10. See you there!

From the President

First of all, I must thank Dorothy Porter for her opening joke at our January Guild meeting. I was taken off guard completely. She told me she was shy!

We had 114 members in attendance to enjoy the very full business meeting and a great program called Men in Quilting, starring Matt Wheeler, owner of the Quilted Bear Store in Ladner, and Paul Krampitz. You can look back at January’s newsletter for a great write up on these two gentlemen which includes a web site for Paul.

The next two months are going to be very busy ones before and after the meetings and at the breaks. Show quilts are being photographed but you only have February and March to take advantage of that service. All quilts must be registered by March 31st. And that is a very serious deadline indeed!! Also, in connection with the Quilt Show, volunteer forms need to be filled out and submitted. And, then, don’t forget that you must renew your membership by the February 28th meeting. Many important things to be done this month and next. So, after filling out a bunch of forms you can get back to quilting and finishing your Show quilts.

Brenda Sangster has been busy organizing a bus trip to Sisters, Oregon taking place from July 12-15. So, you need to register very soon for that trip if you are interested. By the time this newsletter comes to you our Quilt Retreat will be over and I know it will have been a resounding success. Marg told me that 14 of the 22 registrants wanted to get that extra day of sewing in and Edenvale agreed to feed them dinner. Good for you Marg for organizing that sustenance for the group so that they could sew into the night.

Our guild archivist, Anne Read, has finished an album containing photos from 2002 until June 2011. Cathy has processed it so that you can borrow it from the library. We all look so much younger in 2002. I recommend you have a look at it. Anne is also busy working with the Community Quilts Committee and she would like to hand over the archivist job to someone else in June. So, please consider doing that job, especially if you enjoy taking photos.

Good news on the Executive front. We have filled all positions coming available in February with volunteers. Thank you so much ladies. But, if you really would like to serve on the Executive we will be taking nominations from the floor at our next meeting and we might have to have an election. As a member of the phoning committee I would like to say what a pleasure it was to talk to some of our members. I had a member who said she would “think” about serving on the Executive and another who said that she was a “serious maybe.” Those comments kept me phoning and then someone said “yes”, just like that.

At the AGM we will be acknowledging the work done by our outgoing executive members and members who have been active behind the scenes. So, please make an effort to come to the meeting. Our program this month is a trunk show by Vivian Kapusta (her website is awesome) and Kate tells me she has a “special” door prize so remember to wear those name tags. Don’t forget your mug for tea, your cheque book and lets have lots of show and tell.

I wish you all a healthy, happy and successful quilting New Year.

Happy Quilting,
Betty

Featured Speaker: Vivian Kapusta

This month is our annual election, but after the “business” portion of the meeting is over one of our newest guild members, Vivian Kapusta will be presenting a trunk show of her art quilts with a discussion of process and design.

Vivian has been quilting for 15 years and shows her work in national and international shows. She recently curated the ‘Together’ show in La Connor WA at the Quilt and Textile Museum. I’m very excited about meeting Vivian; she was on our list of people we wanted to lure to the Guild for an evening and when she joined the Guild a few months ago we bumped her to the top of our list. Please come out and welcome Vivian to LGQG and make it a fantastic evening.

Community Quilts Workshop

Come join us at our annual Community Quilts Workshop:

When: Friday March 2, 9:30am -4pm and Saturday, March 3, 9:30am -3pm
Where: St Andrews & St Stephen’s Church (2641 Chesterfield Avenue, North Vancouver)

Volunteers are needed to help set up on Thursday (9:30am-4pm) and do some cutting so that people can sew on Friday and Saturday. Also needed is a helper to take the sandwich orders from the people who would rather not bring a lunch on Friday and Saturday, as well as someone to make coffee and tea on both days.

We supply quilts to the Hospitals, and shelters on the North Shore. Working on a quilt in this workshop allows you to work without the costs of fabric, since we supply the fabric and the patterns, and to practice quilting. You also get a chance to meet other guild members and have all the help you need to learn what you need to know. If you like to cook, we would love to taste your baking.
