September Meeting: How I Became a Shop Owner

For something a little different to start off the fall, we invited three shop owners to talk about themselves and their experiences. Well, a little talk, more shopping. Based on the feedback we received and the crowds around the shop tables, the format worked and is something we’ll keep in mind for the future.

1

Special thanks to our own Stephanie of Stitch and Bobbin for stepping in at the last moment with a lovely selection of fabric. We had originally thought having a shop owner who had been in business for many years could give an interesting perspective about the changes in the quilting world, but I found Stephanie’s story resonated with me a great deal and shows just how fast a life can change when you’re willing to take a risk. A set of fat quarters from the ‘Flight’ collection made it into my stash, reminding me of arriving at San Francisco last year on a cruise at the beginning of Fleet Week, and the amazing air show seen from the harbour ferry.

2

Especially popular were the ‘Thicket’ black and white panels brought by Alanna Volp of Cedar & Needle Modern Fabric in Squamish. Over twenty were sold. Alanna suggested we do a show and tell in the new year featuring the finished quilts. Mine will eventually head to Fort St. John for a Christmas baby, with a touch of blue added. If your Thicket quilt is given away before you have an opportunity to show it at a Guild meeting, send me a photo and I’ll add it to the Programs Report along with mine.

3

In addition to a purse pattern and some batik fat quarters, I bought an already made up shopping basket (or large purse) from Lois Kelly, the big blue one below, a Christmas present for a friend. I may – may – tell her I didn’t make it myself. The pattern I bought is wonderfully detailed and the method should be much faster than the technique we learned in the workshop last year. It’s not too late to buy something as the kits and patterns are always available at her Etsy shop: www.etsy.com/ca/shop/BatikBaskets

I hope everyone has as much fun as I did!

Row by Row Mystery

Intrigued by Row by Row quilts? How about a Mystery Row by Row?

Starting in January 2017 I will present a Row by Row that I have designed especially for our guild. A new row will be presented each month from January through May then in June the final rows will be presented to be completed over the summer and fall. In November we will have a big reveal of your beautiful quilts at our final meeting of the year.

Techniques used will be piecing, foundation paper piecing (don’t worry there will be instructions given, links to great tutorials plus support at COPS day every month) and machine applique. I promise nothing will be too difficult for a beginner to expert quilter.

You will probably be able to source all materials, with the exception of your background fabric, from your stash. Solids, tone on tone, batik, hand dies and smaller prints will all work for this project.

That’s it. See? Not complicated at all.

Sign up begins at the October meeting. Cost will be $10

I have enjoyed designing this project and hope you will join me in the mystery or our Row by Row.

Inspiration Challenge

The name “Inspiration Challenge” says it all.

Packaging, clothing, curtains, a book cover, a building… anything at all that inspires you to create a quilt.

How it works:

  • Register at the September and October meetings.
  • Bring both the quilt and the inspiration (or a photo of it) to the November social. Because of the short time frame, just the quilt top needs to be finished.

Fee: $1.

No restriction on size or type of quilt. Prizes will be by popular vote (via secret ballot) at the November meeting.

Challenge: PhDs (UFOs)

Get an early start on those presents you began LAST year, plus all those other unfinished projects we know you have stashed away, because we have them too.

How it works:

  • Register your PhDs at the September, October and November meetings.
  • First chance to show your completed quilts will be at the show and tell in October, last chance in May.
  • The winners will be announced at the June social.

Fee: $2 for each PhD registered.

As usual, the person who finishes the most quilts will win the big cash prize, but we’ll be mixing it up with other categories, such as most completed PhDs donated to Community Quilts, and more chances to win.

Workshop: Landscapes (Susan Jensen)

In this class you will learn the techniques to give you the confidence to create a landscape quilt from any of your own photos.  Learn how to create landscape elements and what fabrics to use and how to enhance your piece with paint and stitching. The techniques include raw edge applique, kraft-tex elements, painting highlights and shadows to give your piece depth. In this workshop you have a choice between 2 photos to work from to start your landscape journey.

DATE: November 5, 2016
TIME: 10 am to 4 pm
LOCATION: Highlands United Church, 3255 Edgemont Blvd., North Vancouver
COST: $40.00

Susan’s Bio:

Creativity has always been in my life thanks to my Dad. He wanted each of us to realize our own creative path and the joy it would bring into our lives. “All work and no play” was not good for the soul he would say. He instilled the love of nature and to appreciate the beauty around us and I shall always be truly grateful for that.

Who am I you ask?

  • Designer of Quilted Escapes Pattern Design, desgining for Northcott Inc. with my patterns being sold across North America and Internationally
  • I recently joined Trend-Tex Inc. as their In-house Desginer and Creative Director
  • I teach at quilt shops, trade shows and guilds
  • Recently opened my new studio where I teach and create fibre art in Maple Ridge, B.C
  • Fibre Artist and a member of the Fibre Arts Network
  • On the editorial committee of the Quilter’s Connection Magazine
  • I’m happily married to my husband of 31 years with 2 beautiful children, 2 beautiful grandchildren. We have 2 dogs and a cat who thinks he’s a dog!

As I spend time out in this glorious province it’s exciting to really look at nature, the sunshine and the shadows, the textures and the colours are just some of what inspires my desgins. I want my fibre art to give the viewer the feeling that they are actually there, that they could walk right into the piece and touch the trees or open the garden gate or get their feet wet down by the water.

My hope is to inspire my students to look at nature with a whole new perspective, and, using what they learn in the classes I offer, create their own masterpieces. In this class you will learn the techniques to give you the confidence to create a landscape quilt from a photo.  You have a choice of 2 photos to work from to start your landscape journey.
