Workshop: House Top Quilt (Barb Mortell)

The ‘House Top Quilt’ is an easy introduction to freedom piecing; it’s a good way to find out if improvisational piecing is for you. Using the familiar Log Cabin as a basis, we experiment with colour relationships and design basics like line, shape and repetition. The quilters of Gee’s Bend use the House Top design to make quilts that are unique and varied. Come explore the simplicity and complexity of the House Top.

Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show

After much anticipation the day had finally come, we were off to Sisters. On the first day with little delay at the border our first stop was at Haggen’s for coffee and “refreshments” to enjoy along the way. Lunch at Red Lobster was a real treat and then it was off to Fabric Depot in Portland. This store is huge! Imagine walking into Costco and all you can see is fabric and notions. With a 35% discount we managed to fill our bags and then some. After a night at the Hilton and a wonderful breakfast we headed out to the Pine Needle in Lake Oswego. They graciously open at 8:30am and we returned the favour by almost clearing their table of Take 5 kits and more. Then it was off to Greenbaums Quilted Forest in Salem. The store was literally filled to the rafters with beautiful quilts and unique fabric. After lunch it was time to head out for a scenic drive to Redmond and an unscheduled roadside stop. The bus got a little overheated and needed a rest on the long mountain climb. Maybe it was all the extra weight we had been adding along the way.

At last it’s Saturday the day we have all been waiting for. The day started out bright and sunny with everyone on the bus by 8:00am. After a quick ride we were at Sisters by 8:30am and the race was on to see the 1300 quilts on display and what a display it was. There were quilts everywhere you could imagine, on the side of buildings, hanging from balconies, on fences, clothes lines and more difficult places that involved help from the fire truck’s ladder. The quits were amazing! It didn’t matter what style you preferred it was on display for your enjoyment.

Alas all good things must come to end and after five amazing hours it was time to head for the bus and a first in the history of the show. It started to rain, just a few drops as we boarded and then the rain hit along with thunder and lightening. As we sat in traffic heading out of town the volunteers were frantically taking down the quilts. For the first time in the history of the show it closed early at 3:00 pm due to rain.

It was a long drive home on Sunday but not a dull one. There wasn’t a silent moment on the bus, everyone chatted about the show and experiences along the way and enjoyed some “refreshments” as well.

Thank you to all the guild and non-guild members that blended together to make this a memorable trip.

Join the fun and excitement as we explore Quilt Shops in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley on our first of many trips to come.

The Quilted Bear in the Ladner Village will be another impressive stop along the way. Matt Wheeler purchased the shop in 2011 and his quilts will amaze you.

From the President

I said, “After the Quilt Show I must clean up, tidy and reorganize my sewing room”. Then my friend said, ” After the Quilt Show I am going to dig out my black and white quilt and start working on that again “. How many of us have said those words lately, “after the Quilt Show”? And now it is here. Our Quilt Show is but a lovely memory. What a wonderful effort we have all made to create and present this splendid showcase for our craft. Well done everyone!! At our June meeting we will have another opportunity to take a look at the award winning quilts. It will be a meeting to have fun, socialize and take some time to thank all of those members who gave some extra energy and time toward the success of our Quilt Show. We will be recognizing the work of the Quilt Show Committee and the Raffle Quilt Committee while nibbling on a sweet or two and sipping a cup of tea or coffee. We are going to celebrate a wonderful accomplishment, our Album of Quilts Show 2012.

In March and April of this year two quilters passed away; one was a member of our guild and the other was an active participant at COPS days. While we are celebrating our quilting community during our June meeting I would like to invite anyone who knew Pat Ingram or Lesley Philbrick to come to the mike and share a few thoughts about these ladies. Please contact me if you would like this opportunity.

At the May meeting we were so fortunate to see a hundred plus community quilts and we acknowledged the work done by our Community Quilts Committee who are: Rosalind Knight, Edna Simpson, Anne Read, Brenda Sangster, Louise Bovet and Karen Widdes (honourary member). Next year the Parade of Community Quilts will be held during our June meeting so we will be able to take much more time to admire our work.

Vivian Kapusta also gave a slide show presentation of the Together Show that was held in La Conner, Washington recently. Thank you Vivian.

COPS days on Saturday July 7th and Saturday Aug. 18th will be held at the Lions Bay hall from 9:30 until 9:00, a mini retreat, if you like. I dropped in on our gals on June 2nd and felt a wonderful sense of comraderie. Of course, some were very intent on their quilting projects because they had very little time until the Quilt Show deadline.

A reminder that our next meeting is on June 26th which is the 4th Tuesday of the month and our last meeting until September 25th. I hope you all enjoy the next few months to rest, quilt, or maybe even garden. I think there are a lot of quilters out there who really enjoy being in their garden. Have a lovely summer everyone but I shall see you all very soon at the June meeting. I think our Program Committee is already thinking “Hallowe’en”. Please remember to return all of your library books, bring a mug, wear your nametag along with a smile and bring Show and Tell items. Workshops is still registering for courses so bring your cheque book or cash; they accept both. Our 50/50 lottery tickets will also be on sale. And, if you are baking up a storm for some occasion or another near the time of our meeting please bring along a plate of “goodies”. We always like to taste members’ baking which will supplement the Program committee’s purchases for our June social.

Happy Quilting,
Betty

June Social

Before you do anything else – pat yourself on the back. This year’s Album of Quilts was simply spectacular. Well done fellow quilters!!

We are going to celebrate our Show’s success at the June Social. Please please please bring your winning quilts for a special show and tell during the second half of our meeting. This is above and beyond our regular show and tell. We will also have snacks and refreshments. Please plan to spend a night relaxing and socializing. Bring handwork if you wish.

For those of you who signed up for the Hallowe’en Potholder Exchange please remember to pickup your instructions and supplies at the Programs table either before the meeting or during the break. If you haven’t signed up for the Potholder Exchange and would like to participate send let me know before JUNE 22 and I will sign you up. Please remember to bring your $2 participation fee to the meeting. We will be exchanging our finished potholders at the September meeting.
