Thanks from Evergreen House and North Shore Hospice
We received cards from Evergreen House, Margret Fulton Centre, and the North Shore Hospice. Letters from Cedarview Lodge and Kiwanis Care Centre. All the letters and cards expressed many thanks and appreciation for the beautiful quilts. As we delivered the quilts to the Intensive Care Nursery at LGH, all the staff and the two moms present were over joyed to see us stating that Childrens Hospital gets so much and they were glad to receive these for the North Shore babes!
Mark your calendars for the Community Quilt days March 5, 6, & 7; we will have some good sewing and conversation time. We have a few kits made up and lots of baby panels to practice your machine quilting. Thank you to everyone for your help.

From the President
September is shaping up to be a lovely warm, sunny month and some of you may still be travelling or gardening and getting as much outdoor time as you can. Good for you. And some of our members are busy in their sewing rooms no matter what the cost to the housework that needs doing. I am in the latter category. I hope all of you have had a restful and enjoyable summer. I look forward to seeing you all on the 4th Tuesday of September. The fourth Tuesday of September is on the 23rd of the month. This is a reminder because there are 5 Tuesdays in September and it would be very sad to miss a meeting.
We are going to be having a little more Quilt Show business that did not get taken care of in June and Dianne Ritter, our Quilt Show Chair, will be able to join us. She is on the mend but has a little ways to go yet before she is her full energetic self. So, go very easy with the hugs. Be gentle with her.
Your Executive met on the 2nd of September to discuss upcoming activities and I am getting excited already about the Programs and Workshops we have scheduled. Please read through this entire Newsletter to see what is going to be happening. You will not want to miss out on anything. Those of you who are registered for the Bali Bags & Bowls workshop in November should really start to do your prep work now. November may seem far, far away but trust me, you need to start to do the prep now!!
Stitch and Bobbin is the new name of our only North Shore quilt shop and I hope all of our members have had a chance to visit with Stephanie Perrins, the new owner. There is an excellent article about the shop in the Fall 2014 issue of Quilter’s Connection Magazine written by Tricia Sherman. And our library may have the magazine processed by our October meeting and ready to borrowed.
There is another Guild Gathering meeting on Saturday September 27th in Langley. This group meets twice a year and sometimes there are up to 15 different guilds represented. I will be going and I would enjoy the company of other guild members. Please email me or talk to me at the September meeting if you would like to go.
We are having a kind of “Garage Sale” program during the November meeting. At the Executive meeting we discussed holding off on the free table for the September and October meetings. Save all of your stuff and bring it in November. We could have a table or two of Free stuff or you might want to put a bit of a price on your treasures. Shopping – such fun!
A reminder to wear your name tags; bring a coffee mug and any extra goodies you have accumulated in your freezers from all of your summer entertaining; cash for 50/50 tickets; any found, overdue library books and cash to pay the fines; and lots and lots of Show and Tell.
Happy Quilting,
Betty
Featured Speaker: Shirley Prakke – My Journey
We are delighted to have Shirley Prakke do a trunk show for our September meeting. Shirley has lived most of her life in South Africa with the exception of several years in Venezuela. She and her husband moved to Vancouver 2 years ago to be closer to their Canadian children and grandchildren. Shirley started quilting in the 1980’s but, has always had a passion for all forms of needlework, colour and pattern. She enjoys hand work with a particular enthusiasm for paper piecing and Mola appliqué. She has taught courses in basics to advanced patchwork, appliqué, mola appliqué and quilting. A blue ribbon winner at our quilt show this year, she is truly one of the guild’s hidden treasures! I think you will find her quilts both unique and inspiring.
Upcoming programs include an amazing trunk show by Carola Russell in October and the return of the popular “Garage Sale – Craft Fair” for November.
Call for Quilts: West Van Library
Our guild has a wonderful opportunity to hang a small show at the West Vancouver Library in the New Year. Krista Hennebury and Carol Piercy will coordinate. The theme is “Log Cabin” – traditional, modern, art, variations ….. we hope for a good variety. It can be a new or pre-shown quilt (as long as it is clean and free of stains). The library will support the show with display cases of quilting books and archival photos of log cabin homes in West Van. They are very excited! Here are the details:
- The show runs Jan 14 – Mar 10, 2015.
- Quilts must be completed by December 1 as we need a firm inventory list with Artist, Title, Price (if it is for sale), Size and Medium info by then.
- Quilts need to be hung on a dowel with a screw eye in either end (dowel supplied by you – we’ll get some screw eyes so we all aren’t getting a package).
- Sleeve does not have to be 4”
- We’ll all share the small cost of other hanging equipment.
- Quilts can be offered for sale by the owner, the library takes a 15% commission and will coordinate buyer and artist to communicate directly with each other.
- As you can see below, there is lots of available space, but nothing for a bed quilt length. A bed quilt could perhaps be hung sideways though…
- If you’d like to see the space, just go visit the West Van library.
- If you have not already let us know you are interested in participating, please let us know now. We will open up space for other guilds if we don’t have enough LGQG participants by October 1.
- We’d appreciate a photo of your quilt(s) and sizes whenever you have them or an idea of what you are making and how it’s going so that we can pre-plan hanging the show.
Sizes of available spaces:
- 8’4” x 48” – main floor, north wall west, near circulation desk
- 6’7” x 78” – main floor, north wall center
- 11’4” x 78” – main floor, north wall east near reading room
- 11’8” x 78” – main floor, south wall
- 4 areas on walls by stairwells – about 40” x 48”
- 11’5” x 48” – lower floor behind information desk
- 2’ x 78” – lower floor, north wall west of info desk
- 3’1” x 78” – lower floor, north wall center
- 9’3” x 48” – lower floor, east alcove
- 9’ x 48” – lower floor, west alcove
- 11’7” x 48” – lower floor, south wall
- Possibility to hang quilts on slatted wall as well (12’) – lower floor
If we have too many quilts, obviously not all will be able to be hung. Bear in mind that they will be handled, and not with white gloves. Thanks so much – here’s hoping for a good turnout!
Please contact Krista or Carol through the guild membership list if you have any questions.
Community Quilts
Thank you to everyone who donated or finished a Community Quilt for the end of June. We had a meeting and divided them all and by the middle of July had them all delivered by Community quilt members. Lots of thanks received and I will read out cards at our meeting. We are still at my writing awaiting news of the opening of Lions Gate Hospital new Psychiatric wing and have quilts for them. We were given a large donation of fabric by Leila Robertson and after sorting have filled up the storage locker. We are hoping to make up some more different quilt kits for you to look through over the coming months.

Quilts at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts
This past June, my husband and I were very fortunate to have spent 4 days in Boston – a fabulous city in which to be a tourist. There is so much history (great, guided walking tours along the Freedom Trail), the JFK Library, a vibrant waterfront, wonderful restaurants (having a lobster roll is an absolute ‘must’) and Duck Tours of the city and the Charles River. We had real excitement when our amphibious vehicle was rammed by a small sailboat taking part in a sailing lesson – the only injury was to the young sailor’s pride. This was a ‘first’ according to our very entertaining tour guide/driver.
The highlight for me happened quite by chance. While talking to the concierge in our hotel lobby, I noticed a display of tourist brochures and the word ‘Quilt’ jumped out at me. At the Boston Museum of Fine Arts was and exhibition entitled ‘Quilts and Color, the Pilgrim/Roy Collection’. The museum itself is one of the largest in the US and an amazing place to explore. The quilts were incredible, most of them dating from the mid to late 1800’s. According to the brochure, the show “…celebrates the vibrant color palettes and inventive quilts from the acclaimed Pilgrim/Roy Collection. Trained as artists, Paul Pilgrim and Gerald Roy built their collection by acquiring quilts with bold, eye-popping designs. The exhibition recognizes the artistic vision of quilt makers, and highlights artists who broke with conventional patterns and design.”
Apart from the sheer beauty of the quilts, I was struck by how contemporary many of them seemed. Even my husband was fascinated by the use of colour and the designs themselves – he lasted over 3 hours without complaint.
I am including a few photos which really don’t do justice to the quilts. For anyone who wants to know a bit more about this show, there is a YouTube video of Gerald Roy discussing the show.
