Holiday Quilting: Laurel Hickey

I made a set of three patio pillows from old jeans (black ones in this case) mixed with homespun-style fabrics I had in my stash — I like them so much I’m making some as Christmas gifts. I’m also working on place mats with one set that needs to beat the mailing deadline for the UK. I’m at the stage where nothing seems to be progressing very quickly.

Fitting Community Quilts into Your Busy Schedule

How can you find some time for Community Quilts in your busy schedules? Here are a few ideas:

  1. If you’re making blocks for a project, make one or two extra as you go; it only takes a few to make a small quilt. It also uses up extra fabric, so you’re not left with “that annoying little bundle of coordinated scraps.”
  2. As you’re machine piecing, have some pieces for assembly next to your machine…you won’t have to break the thread, you can chain piece. Before you know it, you’ll have quite a few completed units/blocks.
  3. If your “Weekender Bag” project has you freaking out, take a time out and piece something simple; it will be a good refresher and it’ll make you feel like you accomplished something.
  4. If you only have 5, 10, 15 minutes to quilt, run up one small block.
  5. Remember that fabric you bought, and now you just look at it and say “What was I thinking? Someone else will love it, so use a quick technique like 8 or 10 inch blocks, nine patch, or strip piecing and it will come together. (Bonus: this makes for new fabric in your stash.)

So save the date for the workshop on March 5, 6 and 7th, 2015. Hope to see you there!

Holiday Quilting: Anne Pelton

peltonI am planning to make aprons and pot holders with New York fabrics I had bought when there in the summer. I just decided yesterday to get into making a couple of really quick table runners for gifts, and here is the picture of those. The top one is the super quick one Carla talked about at the last meeting. I have made that pattern before and it couldn’t be quicker.

Holiday Quilting: Annette Wilson Blair

hickey

blair.pngI am debating whether to cover the Flower Fairy panel with heavy clear vinyl pockets for toys, shoes etc in a baby’s room, to hang from a door, as it is skinny, or to flesh out the width and quilt it. I bought the panel from Carola at the quilt Show, as my mum (89) grew up loving Cecily Barker’s books, so as a result, so did I. The debate is to give it to my mum as a quilt, or my five month old granddaughter as an organizer in a small apartment.

From the President

For those of you who could not make it to our September meeting you missed an interesting and informative trunk show given by one of our newer members, Shirley Prakke. Her trunk show was titled “My Journey” and she talked about her own life journey and then her quilting journey. There was much interest and enthusiasm for some possible workshops in the future focused on Shirley’s African Mola applique technique. It was a pleasure to just sit and listen to Shirley’s lovely South African accent and of course stare in awe at her work.

Everyone still has a chance to show off her/his work at the Quilt Exhibit to be held at the West Vancouver Memorial Library from January 14 until March 10, 2015. Krista Hennebury and Carol Piercy have agreed to coordinate this exhibit and all of the information is in our September Newsletter. The most important date is December 1st at which time you need to commit.

While we are on the subject of showing off quilts Dianne Ritter has kindly agreed to Chair our Quilt Show 2016 which has already been booked for 2016 at the Capilano Sportsplex building. Stay tuned and perhaps get started on that project you have always wanted to do or try or explore or have imagined doing. You have seen the facility and so now we can imagine how absolutely wonderful all of our quilts are going to look in that venue in a couple of years.

The end of the year is fast approaching and our Treasurer is starting to think about closing the books on 2014. If you have spent money on guild related activities and need to be reimbursed please submit an Expense Submission Form. I will have some copies of that form with me at the next two guild meetings or you can email me for a copy. Suzanne will probably also have some forms with her at the next two meetings.

We are having an “As Good as New” Sale for our November program and because of that we will not be having the usual FREE TABLE set up this month. Save those dear items and bring them to the sale in November and earn a little money. Please contact Genevieve to book a table. Our Program Committee has been hard at work planning some interesting, informative and of course entertaining programs. I think they have scheduled almost all of our programs until June. Well done ladies!! I think all of us should be making an effort to thank Genevieve Tobin, Rita Douglas and Marina Green for all of their time and effort on our behalf. Pat them on the back the next time you are talking to them, maybe even a hug with your thank you. And don’t forget to give them feedback and/or your suggestions for future programs.

Our next meeting is on the 28th of October. Don’t forget your name tag, (necessary to win the door prize), your mug, cash for our 50/50 draw and perhaps for some overdue library books, your cheque book for workshop registration, any left over Thanksgiving goodies in your fridge or birthday celebrations sweets, your Show and Tell and your smiling faces. Oooh, I almost forgot, money to shop with. Our October Program brings us Carola Russell from her shop on the Sunshine Coast and she is bringing “stuff”.

Happy Quilting,
Betty

West Vancouver Library Quilt Show Reception

Thanks to everyone who has contacted us with the dimensions of their log cabin quilts for the West Vancouver Library show in the new year. We could still use some wall-hanging sized quilts (45″ or less in both dimensions). If you have a long cabin quilt of any kind that is on the small size and would like the opportunity to show it and even possibly sell it, please contact either of us to register it for the show. All pertinent dates and info are in previous newsletters.

The library has offered us the use of their meeting room to hold an opening reception on the afternoon of Sunday, January 18th, 2015. We are looking for a volunteer to coordinate coffee/tea and baking for this event and are hopeful that you will want to attend and invite friends and family as well!

Featured Speaker: Carola Russell

Carola Russell Carola has had her very own Quilt Shop in Gibsons BC on the Sunshine Coast for almost ten years. She has been a “sewing and quilting educator” for thirty years. Carola loves to share ideas and inspire others to love quilting more. You will enjoy her trunk show – it is full of “a little bit of something for everyone.” She will spice it up with sewing tricks, techniques, advice and tips that will make your quilting better and more fun.

Carola will be bringing items from her store, and they will be available for sale at the meeting.

Coming in November: Our “Good as New Sale.” Book a table with Genevieve Tobin at the meeting or by phone after Oct. 23. No charge for the table. Sale will be in place of having a speaker.
