2014 Raffle Quilts

For the 2014 Quilt show we have two, very different, but beautiful quilts for our draw! At the February meeting we will display the raffle quilts. Raffle tickets will be available for all of us to buy, for advance sales to our family and friends. In addition we will have pictures of each quilt for you to show the purchasers as you sell the tickets! The photos of the quilts will also be available on our website.

Tickets will be sold in books of 15 tickets and cost $25.00. All tickets are to be sold at 3 for $5.00. As done previously, the member buys the book of tickets up front for $25.00, sell the tickets (this money is now yours) and return the stubs for the draw. We keep track of member names and ticket books. Please ensure all stubs are returned to the raffle committee for the draw at the end of our show.

Help us sell raffle tickets and promote our show in June. We will have a volunteer sign-up sheet for members who would like to assist us in selling raffle tickets at other local quilt guild meetings in March/April/May and at Lion’s Gate Hospital.

Quilt Show 2014 … Will You Be Ready?

Hopefully everyone has been working on their show quilts, registration for the show begins this month which makes the show feel much more real for everyone on the committee.

Remember that your quilt does not need to be finished to register it, you simply need a photo of a completed portion (to provide a colour reference) and a fairly accurate description of the size.

You can register up to 3 quilts, one of which can be extra-large.

Please be sure to renew your membership by the end of February and submit your volunteer forms at the same time.

Quilt Show Registration is Open

It’s time again to register quilts for our show in June 2014! Quilts from all qualified members (beginners to advanced) are welcome – be sure to take this opportunity to show off all of your hard work to our community!

In person registration will take place at the January 28, February 25, and March 25 meetings. We will be available to accept forms and take pictures from 7:00 to 7:30 before each meeting and during each meeting’s coffee break.

The Registration Rules and Information Sheet is now available on the website – please read it carefully as it contains important details. The Registration Form is also available on the website for you to complete and/or print. Please remember to check that all the information is filled out on the Registration Form before handing it in. Don’t forget your own Name and Phone Number!

A 4”x6” photograph should accompany each registration form. Please put your name and the name of the quilt on the back of the photo. For those who are unable to provide a picture, we will be taking photos at the meetings for the cost of $1.00 per photo.

There will be a few extra copies of the Rules and Information Sheet, and the Registration Forms, at the meetings for those who need them. Completed Registration forms, with photos, can also be mailed to my home or dropped off (please call to make arrangements first). No quilt registrations will be accepted after MARCH 31, 2012.

If you have any question about the registration process, please contact Barbara Brawn.

Quilt Show Volunteers Needed

Our quilt show is fast approaching! To help with the planning and preparation, please take the time to fill out the attached volunteer information in this newsletter or you can also access the form on our website. The forms are due at the February meeting of the Guild.

NOTE: With the change in venue this year, we will need to have two admission tables, so don’t hesitate to choose this as your job. Also, the gallery positions will be mostly walking as we only need two people at the exit doors, so if you have physical concerns, please indicate that on your volunteer form. When you take the time to let me know your availability, you help in making the show run smoothly and well.

It is the expectation of the guild that every member volunteer for AT LEAST TWO SEPARATE SHIFTS DURING our show. However, many of you do volunteer for many more than the minimum requirement, which is greatly appreciated.

Our show is a wonderful opportunity to meet and get to know your fellow guild members. The show itself is a marvelous opportunity for us to showcase our passion in quilting and to encourage new members to join us. If you have any questions regarding the jobs, please read the attached job description sheet, or phone me!

What Will You Be Selling in the Boutique?

We encourage you to participate and put your skills and stash to good use: sew, sell, make money, buy more fabric! All members are invited to sew or craft items for the boutique. You set your own prices and keep 90% of your sales – the guild receives 10%.

Several throw quilts and table runners sold last time and we could have easily sold more baby quilts. If you’ve got an easy patchwork pattern in cute, current fabrics (even just a charm pack of 5″ squares sewn together!), these would be great. Seasonal quilts (Christmas/Hallowe’en) also sold. Other ideas include: embroidered or appliqued tea towels, small stuffed animals, pin cushions, tea cozies, seasonal or decorative potholders, napkins, knit items (dish cloths, socks, baby items), flannel receiving blankets and wash cloths, jewelry, photo greeting cards, bookmarks, purses, wallets, tote bags, gadget sleeves (ipad, e-reader, cell phone), zipper pouches, box pouches…etc. Due to the timing of the show, Christmas ornaments were not as popular last time around, but we do have a small artificial tree for display if anyone would like to try again.

Start thinking about what you would like to make and sell at the boutique. Inventory sheets will be available in the new year. Keep in mind, when filling out your volunteer form, that guild members who made boutique items and volunteered in the boutique had the most success. Buyers love to meet the people who make all the lovely things!

2014 Quilt Show Is On!

LGQG 2014 Quilt Show Report A full committee is in place and we are well on our way to having the show organized! Show and tell is a good gauge for what will be on display and based on what I have seen in the past year I am sure our show will be filled with amazing quilts of all shapes and sizes from the wide spectrum of quilting styles that our members enjoy. While we don’t have the number of quilts per member nailed down as yet, it is likely that it will be 3. So keep working on those works of art!!

My thanks to the following guild members for volunteering to work on the committee:
Rebecca Skiffington – Treasurer
Carol Piercy – Hanging Coordinator
Krista Hennebury – Boutique Coordinator
Barb Brawn – Registration Coordinator
Vicky Digby – Volunteer Coordinator
Jo Ann Lee – Merchant Mall Coordinator
Karen Munro – Education Coordinator
Linda Heese – Publicity Coordinator
Trudy Jaskela – Tea Room Coordinator
Myra Frampton – assisting Trudy
Marsha McKay – assisting Krista in the boutique
Andrea Cowie – assisting Barb with descriptions
Leslie Forbes – shadowing Carol

From Karen Munro: If you would like to help plan the education area please contact Karen either at the meeting or by phone.

From Krista & Marsha: We encourage you to participate and put your skills and stash to good use: sew, sell, make money, buy more fabric! From Barb Brawn: I would like to remind previous volunteers (and new volunteers) that I will need their help starting in January – our first meeting when quilts can be registered. The registration and volunteer forms will be included in the January newsletter along with specifics on quilt size, number eligible, registration dates etc.

Guild Challenge: The challenge pin cushions will be on display at the show. Funds raised from the auctioning of the pincushions will be given to workshops for equipment upgrades.

Pincushion Challenge

Have you joined up for the Pin Cushion Challenge? There are only 14 packages of glass and official entry forms left.

  • Make any pincushion you want.
  • Display it at the guild quilt show and compete for prizes. Three prizes will be awarded for viewer’s choice.
  • But there’s a catch: You must donate your pincushion to the guild; a silent auction will be held at the June meeting. Proceeds from the pincushion auction will go to the workshop committee to buy things they could use to improve workshops.
Fee: $2.00 (includes glass filling)
Once all packets of glass are gone no more entries will be permitted. See you at the challenge table in October.

Quilt Show Wrap-Up

Another show has come and gone. The quilts are down, the vendors have gone home, and I am happy to report that once again we hosted a stellar event. We had so many wonderful compliments on the quality of the show. The way it was organized, the beautiful quilts, the way they were displayed, the wonderful boutique, the delicious food, the warm and friendly attitude of our volunteers and the fabulous merchant mall (although there was a lot of whining about empty pocketbooks on that last one!)

People kept telling me what a wonderful job I had done but in fact it was my team who did a wonderful job. All of them worked tirelessly to ensure that every job was done, every detail taken care of and they did it with enthusiasm and good humour. I cannot thank them enough for their participation and their support of our guild.

We could not put this show on without the volunteers that show up for their shifts every day ready and willing to greet the public and represent our guild. A big thank you goes out from our committee to all of the members who volunteered at the show.

Of course the other hugely important contribution was the quilts that you so lovingly made. The viewing public were in awe of the artistry and skill on display in the gallery.

A list of Viewers Choice Ribbon and Quilt Show Committee Ribbon winners is included in this newsletter and by now should be posted on our website along with a smilebox of all the quilts that were hung in the show.

From a financial perspective we did not make as much money as we did in 2010 but according to my treasurer Rebecca we have a profit of approximately $1500 so we have a bit of starting capital for the next show. A full financial report will be forwarded to Betty before the end of the month and the books will be closed on another Album of Quilts.

Thank you again for your participation.

Quilt Show Committee Ribbon Winners

A word about Quilt Show Committee Ribbons: When our committee first gathered Krista put forth the idea that we could each make a ribbon for an aspect of quilting that was for one reason or another special to us and award that ribbon to the quilt in the show that, in our opinion, best represented our ribbon. We hope that the winners enjoy having the ribbons as much as we enjoyed creating them and choosing which quilt to award them to.

SIGN FRAMES If you have a metal frame for our lawn signs hiding in your house/garage/basement please bring it to the JUNE meeting. The number we had available this year was much smaller than it needed to be so before we have to order 500 more (minimum order) we would like to know how many we really have!

GLOVES Our stock of gloves is much smaller post show than it was pre show. If you found a glove in your pocket when you got home please return it at the JUNE meeting.

RIBBON WINNERS Please bring your quilts to the JUNE meeting. This is for ALL ribbon winners – Viewers Choice, Committee Ribbons and Challenge Ribbons.

Thanks!

Quilt Show Is Almost Here!

One month from the time I am writing this we will be in the midst of quilt drop off – how are your show quilts coming? I wish I could say mine are complete but I still have time right?! Just a few reminders for you:

  • Quilt drop off is on June 6th at Delbrook Rec Center on West Queens Road from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. We will take quilts at the first entry door to the gym.
  • If you need to pull one of your quilts from the show please call Elaine Fjoser and tell her as soon as possible.
  • Vicki still has 18 spots to fill to cover all of the shifts in the different areas. If you have not yet volunteered please call Vicki and let her know when you are available. Our show is not possible without your support so please volunteer for at least two, two hour shifts.
  • Quilt pick up is on June 9th from 6 to 7 PM. You MUST have the slip given to you at drop off in order to pick up your quilt. If you are unable to retrieve your quilt please have a friend do it for you. We do not want to take them home with us.
  • Challenge quilts will also be available for pick up at the same time. Again you do need the purple slip you were given in order to retrieve your quilt. Challenge Quilts will be shown at the May meeting but will be retained and hung in the show. They will not be returned to you at the May meeting.
  • Boutique items can be dropped off on June 6th from 6:30 to 8:00 PM at the far gym doorway. Please make sure that all of your items are marked with your initials and the price and be sure to include an inventory sheet. Pick up time on the 9th for boutique items is the same as for quilts.
  • ARE YOU SELLING QUILTS IN THE BOUTIQUE? If so please let Krista know how many and what size. This will help her plan for display. Thanks!
  • If you have loaned items for the education display they will be available at the same entrance as the boutique items.
  • Remember your quilt must have a sleeve securely attached to the back of it.

I know we will have a wonderful show because of the calibre of the work I see every month at show and tell. Our show is our time to shine so please remember to enjoy yourself and take in the beauty our members have created.

Now I am off to work on my quilts!!

Happy Quilting!
Dianne
