From the President

I don’t think that I have ever seen such a beautiful array of colours for sale as I did at our October meeting. The goods for sale were an astounding array of threads and fabrics but mostly threads. Wow !! Carola Russell was very entertaining as she demonstrated many ways to make quick and easy quilts along with handy, dandy tips. Fortunately, our guild was able to offer up a mobile design wall. Mind you the design wall, in the form of Inge Grootendorst, did volunteer on our behalf and she was professional, obliging and was not easily embarrassed by all of the attention to the square of fabric fronting her bosom. Thank you Inge for being such a good sport.

And I want to thank guild members for being such good sports in moving from one line to another without any complaints during our break. We had the refreshments line up, the looking to purchase goods line up and then the actual line up to pay for your purchases. It all went very smoothly and we were only 10 minutes late leaving the Hall. If you see Stephen Smith, the church caretaker, before or after our meeting please thank him for all of the work he does for us. He is always accommodating and rarely complains even if we are late and therefore he is late getting home.

We have another opportunity to shop at our November meeting and we usually take this time of year to allow some time for socializing. So, after the business and Show and Tell we shall have our break and the tables of “as good as new” items shall be revealed. If you want to reserve a table or two for the evening please do so immediately through Genevieve Tobin. And if you have been baking up a storm getting ready for some festive celebrations please feel free to bring along some treats to our meeting. Last month we had a lovely assortment of goodies. Thank you to those who remember to treat us.

If you have spent some money on behalf of the guild you must complete and give our Treasurer, Suzanne Patchell, an Expense Submission Form by the November meeting.

Elections and our annual AGM are happening in February so please consider volunteering your time for one of the following positions: President, Secretary, Workshops Co-ordinator, Membership Co-ordinator and Member-at Large.

I want to give a huge thank you to members who have already given me baby quilts and promised me baby quilts to be donated by Friday December 12th to Brenda Acosta, an Outreach Worker in Burnaby. Brenda is working with pregnant women and young mothers. To date I have 27 quilts (16 physically present in my house) and I just know that I will be able to deliver the 40 quilts she hesitatingly asked for.

Remember all the usual items for our next meeting: name tags, mugs, cash and cheque book and Show and Tell and any treats you would like us to test for you.

See you on November 25th.

Happy Quilting
Betty

November is our last meeting of the year. It is a time to think of renewal for 2015. Look for the renewal form on our website in the New Year. This form can be typed on, then printed and brought to the guild meeting or mailed to the guild mailbox – the address is on the form. It cannot be saved. This form will also be attached to the January newsletter.

The guild currently has 134 registered members. We had 89 members present at our October meeting and we welcomed 2 guests. The guild also welcomed 3 new members.

Be sure to sign in and be wearing your nametag in order to claim your door prize, should your name be drawn. Nametags are available, if you forgot to bring yours, and are $1.00 each at the membership table.

Should you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.

For those of you who could not make it to our September meeting you missed an interesting and informative trunk show given by one of our newer members, Shirley Prakke. Her trunk show was titled “My Journey” and she talked about her own life journey and then her quilting journey. There was much interest and enthusiasm for some possible workshops in the future focused on Shirley’s African Mola applique technique. It was a pleasure to just sit and listen to Shirley’s lovely South African accent and of course stare in awe at her work.

Everyone still has a chance to show off her/his work at the Quilt Exhibit to be held at the West Vancouver Memorial Library from January 14 until March 10, 2015. Krista Hennebury and Carol Piercy have agreed to coordinate this exhibit and all of the information is in our September Newsletter. The most important date is December 1st at which time you need to commit.

While we are on the subject of showing off quilts Dianne Ritter has kindly agreed to Chair our Quilt Show 2016 which has already been booked for 2016 at the Capilano Sportsplex building. Stay tuned and perhaps get started on that project you have always wanted to do or try or explore or have imagined doing. You have seen the facility and so now we can imagine how absolutely wonderful all of our quilts are going to look in that venue in a couple of years.

The end of the year is fast approaching and our Treasurer is starting to think about closing the books on 2014. If you have spent money on guild related activities and need to be reimbursed please submit an Expense Submission Form. I will have some copies of that form with me at the next two guild meetings or you can email me for a copy. Suzanne will probably also have some forms with her at the next two meetings.

We are having an “As Good as New” Sale for our November program and because of that we will not be having the usual FREE TABLE set up this month. Save those dear items and bring them to the sale in November and earn a little money. Please contact Genevieve to book a table. Our Program Committee has been hard at work planning some interesting, informative and of course entertaining programs. I think they have scheduled almost all of our programs until June. Well done ladies!! I think all of us should be making an effort to thank Genevieve Tobin, Rita Douglas and Marina Green for all of their time and effort on our behalf. Pat them on the back the next time you are talking to them, maybe even a hug with your thank you. And don’t forget to give them feedback and/or your suggestions for future programs.

Our next meeting is on the 28th of October. Don’t forget your name tag, (necessary to win the door prize), your mug, cash for our 50/50 draw and perhaps for some overdue library books, your cheque book for workshop registration, any left over Thanksgiving goodies in your fridge or birthday celebrations sweets, your Show and Tell and your smiling faces. Oooh, I almost forgot, money to shop with. Our October Program brings us Carola Russell from her shop on the Sunshine Coast and she is bringing “stuff”.

Happy Quilting,
Betty

September is shaping up to be a lovely warm, sunny month and some of you may still be travelling or gardening and getting as much outdoor time as you can. Good for you. And some of our members are busy in their sewing rooms no matter what the cost to the housework that needs doing. I am in the latter category. I hope all of you have had a restful and enjoyable summer. I look forward to seeing you all on the 4th Tuesday of September. The fourth Tuesday of September is on the 23rd of the month. This is a reminder because there are 5 Tuesdays in September and it would be very sad to miss a meeting.

We are going to be having a little more Quilt Show business that did not get taken care of in June and Dianne Ritter, our Quilt Show Chair, will be able to join us. She is on the mend but has a little ways to go yet before she is her full energetic self. So, go very easy with the hugs. Be gentle with her.

Your Executive met on the 2nd of September to discuss upcoming activities and I am getting excited already about the Programs and Workshops we have scheduled. Please read through this entire Newsletter to see what is going to be happening. You will not want to miss out on anything. Those of you who are registered for the Bali Bags & Bowls workshop in November should really start to do your prep work now. November may seem far, far away but trust me, you need to start to do the prep now!!

Stitch and Bobbin is the new name of our only North Shore quilt shop and I hope all of our members have had a chance to visit with Stephanie Perrins, the new owner. There is an excellent article about the shop in the Fall 2014 issue of Quilter’s Connection Magazine written by Tricia Sherman. And our library may have the magazine processed by our October meeting and ready to borrowed.

There is another Guild Gathering meeting on Saturday September 27th in Langley. This group meets twice a year and sometimes there are up to 15 different guilds represented. I will be going and I would enjoy the company of other guild members. Please email me or talk to me at the September meeting if you would like to go.

We are having a kind of “Garage Sale” program during the November meeting. At the Executive meeting we discussed holding off on the free table for the September and October meetings. Save all of your stuff and bring it in November. We could have a table or two of Free stuff or you might want to put a bit of a price on your treasures. Shopping – such fun!

A reminder to wear your name tags; bring a coffee mug and any extra goodies you have accumulated in your freezers from all of your summer entertaining; cash for 50/50 tickets; any found, overdue library books and cash to pay the fines; and lots and lots of Show and Tell.

Happy Quilting,
Betty

Hello, Lions Gate quilters. Welcome back!!

Fall is a time for getting back into our normal routines. With such a beautiful summer and all that great weather I am hoping you were able to get away to enjoy some down time with family and friends. Now it’s time to spend some time with your quilting friends.

I hope to see a lot of you at the September meeting. We are always delighted to see returning members and have new members join us. The registration fee for returning members as of the June meeting will be $55.00 for the year. Only new members will be prorated to $27.50 for the remainder of the year.

We currently have 129 registered members and we had 81 members in attendance along with 4 guests at our June guild meeting. We would also like to welcome the 3 new members who joined the guild that evening.

Be sure to sign in and be wearing your nametag in order to claim your door prize, should your name be drawn. Nametags are available, if you forgot to bring yours, and are $1.00 each at the membership table.

As I write this I am thinking about what is left for me to do in order to be ready for the Quilt Show. I only have to wash one large quilt and sew the sleeve on which is already made. I am almost there. And then, before we know it, and when you read this June Newsletter, our Lions Gate Quilters Guild Biannual Quilt Show will be over but not forgotten. In fact, at our June meeting we will be celebrating another, wonderful, successful quilt show and we will be thanking our hard working Show Committee. We will have to do a little business but most of evening will be filled with lots and lots of Show and Tell, a silent auction of numerous pin cushions (all award winning), socializing, some kind of strip poker game, refreshments and door prizes. Finally, we will be able to relax and just enjoy the memories.

During our May meeting we celebrated our Community Quilts Program by just looking at and admiring the quilts. In past years we had some complaints that Community Quilts were just rushed passed us and we could not really enjoy viewing them. So, we have slowed the whole process down. Anita Jones-Gould, President of Community Quilts, has told me that we have made approximately 130 quilts this year and they will all be donated by the Fall. Some of the recipients of Community Quilts are: Capilano Day Care Centre, Kiwanis Care Centre – Seymour, the Lions Gate Hospital shop, Lions Gate Hospital – NIC unit, Margaret Fulton Adult Daycare, RCMP North Vancouver, West Vancouver Adult Day Care, North Shore Womens’ Centre, Sage House, Evergreen House, the Hope Centre, North Shore Hospice and Womens’ Hospital. We are so very fortunate to have a large committee of members working with Anita. They are: Dorothy Porter (Treasurer), Louise Bovet, Barb Brawn, Kathleen Houston, Arlene Ingraham, Karen Marshall, Anne Read, Brenda Sangster, Nancy Moore and Donna Hoffman. Congratulations ladies for a job well done.

No more measuring your Show and Tell this month. Dorothy Porter has done a great job of recording and measuring quilts for us and she has sent them in our Canadian Quilters Association as we participate in the Walk to Brock Challenge. After our May meeting Dorothy sent me a copy of her email to CQA. In it she wrote that we measured 2,970 inches at our regular Show and Tell; 24,255 inches of Community Quilts and 53,960 inches on public display at our Quilt Show. Wow weeoly !!! I don’t know if that is a word but it should be. Congratulations everyone for being so diligent in your measuring assignments. And thank you Dorothy for keeping us updated. CQA wrote back to Dorothy and reported that our guild, The Lions Gate Quilters Guild of North Vancouver, had submitted a Total of over 118,000 inches. CQA was impressed. Another Wow weeoly !!!!

I look forward to seeing everyone at our June meeting. Ridge Meadows Guild is coming to sell raffle tickets and we are giving our 50/50 gals the month off. So, bring your small change for tickets and any library fines you might owe. Also, our library is having a book sale so more money is required. And, the silent auction is happening, but that might require cheques which will also be needed for workshops sign up. If you finished the Mystery quilt please bring it for Show and Tell along with any other sewing you have had time to do. Don’t forget your mug and name tag and library books.

Finally, please remember to return your Quilt Show lawn sign frames at the June meeting.

Happy Quilting,
Betty
