Membership

Our November meeting is your last chance to be sure your membership for 2015 is current and that you are a member in good standing if you wish to show a quilt in the 2016 quilt show in June. You will actually have until the first week of December, so if you can’t make it to the meeting be sure your 2015 form is postmarked by December 5th. If you know of past members who have mentioned they may like to participate, please pass the information along. Membership forms are available on the web site.

The renewal of membership for 2016 will be at the February meeting, but you are always welcome to bring it to the January meeting.

The guild currently has 137 members. We had 83 members present at the October meeting and we welcomed 1 guest. Five people joined the guild – 3 new members and 2 returning members.

Remember to wear your name tags if you would like to win a door prize. Everyone who signs in, has an opportunity to win. Nametags are available for $1.00 each at the membership table.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.

Happy Quilting!

Workshops

Hello Lions Gate Quilters,

As you all know, our Free Motion Machine Quilting and Shrinky Stretchy Pliable Patchwork Workshops were undersubscribed. After putting the word out through the Guild Gathering, we were still coming up short. We commenced with further advertising efforts including another notice through the Gathering, emailing all the Lions Gate Guild members, and cooperation from several retail outlets that are quilt related. Viola! we were able to sufficiently fill our classes.

Free Motion Machine Quilting, with Terry Grusendorf, was held on October 17th, at Gloria Dei Church, with registration of 18 people. This was the first time we have used the hall at Gloria Dei, and found it to be very nice for several reasons, but not really bright enough. The number of electrical plugs was a bit shy, as well. The workshop, however, was great!

We have booked the facility at St Stephens Catholic Church for the January Extravaganza. The theme of the day is quilting with precuts. Elaine Andrew will lead us through creating a Long John Jellies quilt, using a jelly roll. Attendees will be asked to bring their quilts made from precuts of all types for show and tell, and we will have a potluck lunch. The cost for the day is $25. About six people are registered so far, so hopefully it will fill up at the next guild meeting. The past four years, we have had 44 or 45 people attending each year.

Registration for our Lonestar Circle workshop with Krista Hennebury on February 20th was brisk at the last meeting. At a maximum of 18 attendees, we have only a few spots left. There will be opportunity to sign up at the next guild meeting.

From the Vice-President

Hello fellow guild members. As Bena, our president, enjoys her vacation in France, I’ve been delegated to write your monthly welcome. My theme, in keeping with the season, is thank-you.

Fall is well and truly upon us and that glorious summer is now only a fond memory. We had an eventful October starting off with a well-received September program where we all learned some new and useful tips. We have a wealth of teaching talent within our guild! Thank you! And the Amica quilt display was a great success under the direction of Leslie Rutledge. Thank you to her group of hardworking volunteers!

As we get back to the sewing machines in earnest, it’s also time to plan for the year ahead. Our guild executive elections are just around the corner and I invite all guild members to consider running for the upcoming positions: vice president, treasurer, newsletter editor, librarian, member at large, membership coordinator and program coordinator. We have a large group of members that take on multiple volunteer roles within the guild and I expressly invite new people to step forward to participate in the running of the guild and it’s programs. We are also recruiting for a new Quilt Show Coordinator and Diane Ritter, as outgoing coordinator, has graciously offered to mentor a new Coordinator and smooth the transition. Thank you!

At this time, I would also like to thank outgoing CQA rep, Dorothy Porter, and welcome Krista Hennebury into the role.

We welcome Dianne Stephenson as our speaker this month. A number of the guild members took her “Canadiana in Cloth” workshop for 8 months last year and her new presentation is titled “Feedsacks to Fancy Things”. I hope to see some of those finished quilts at our show and tell this month. See you at the meeting on the 27th.

Volunteer for the Guild Executive

As you know, our AGM is coming up in February and several executive positions are coming vacant. We hope you will give serious consideration to occupying one of them. Those of us who have done so can attest to the fun we have had and the new friendships that have been made. If there is a position you think you might be interested in make a point of finding out more about it from the person or people currently in it. You may be surprised to find out that it is not always as daunting as it may at first appear.

These are the positions that will be available:

Vice President
The Vice President takes over the duties of the president in the absence of the president. They also oversee the storage locker and post office box rentals.

Treasurer
The treasurer looks after all the money business of the guild. That business includes preparing year end financial statements, any required tax returns, preparation of draft and final budgets, and presenting financial and budget details to the AGM.

Newsletter Editor
Prepares and distributes the monthly guild newsletter for the nine months of September through November and January through June.

Member-at-Large
There are two members -at-large. Although there are two members each serving a two year term, one new member is elected each year. The members -at-large greet members arriving at guild meetings, look after the 50-50 raffle which includes applying for the annual license, assist with show and tell, and are another avenue of communicating with the executive. They also communicate congratulations or condolences to fellow guild members on behalf of the guild. In the second year of his or her term, the member-at-large is the Nominating Committee Coordinator for the upcoming elections.

Library
The person responsible for the library puts out the books for each meeting and stores them away afterwards. They record books in and out, collect library fines, purchase new books for the library , and cull any that are outdated.

We have a very talented group of people in our guild. We hope you will consider sharing your talents with your guild.

Workshop: January Extravaganza (Elaine Andrew)

january_extravaganzaBring a Jelly Roll, and we’ll make up some no-calorie Jelly Long Johns. You can even keep your New Year’s resolutions with these ones! Better yet, work from your stash, and you’ll be able to keep more than one resolution! We will explore many possible ways of setting these quick, easy blocks. If you would rather work on something else, that’s fine, too. Just bring it along! Please bring any quilts you have handy that were made from precuts, and share your ideas. As always at this annual event, we will have a pot luck lunch, prizes, companionship and fun.

Elaine, our instructor for this day, has been quilting so long, she remembers when rotary cutters were invented. A retired nurse, she now keeps herself busy with a computerized longarm quilting business, chairing a quilt guild in Calgary, making oodles of quilts, and teaching others to quilt. She is an entertaining and knowledgeable person, who happens to also be my sister!

Quilt around the World: 3rd International Block Swap

block_swapBuilding on the great success of our past community activities, we at Quilt around the World have started a new global patchwork project: the 3rd International Block Swap. This time, the motto is “In the Sun.”

Quilters around the world… are invited to design 9 patchwork blocks on the motto “In the Sun” and send them to us. All participants then will be grouped into international teams, within which the 9 blocks will be exchanged by our team.

The deadline for the finished blocks is May 31, 2016. You can find all details in the IBS3 download flyer or on our website.

From the President

I hope everyone has had a good summer. I know that our family spent much time enjoying the outdoors and the sunshine. This was the first year I successfully grew tomatoes and basil.

Our new sound system received its first use at our June meeting. We had some minor glitches requiring adjustments to minimize feedback. But voices are clear.

Those who attended the June meeting will remember the letter I read from a 1992 Newsletter. It seems like our first formal monthly meeting took place on Jan 20, 1987 but the founding members met to plan it all in the fall of 1986. The Guild is almost 39 years old!

As fall approaches on this, our collective minds are leaning to quilting hours in warm houses, with friends, or at retreats. We have 2 shows coming up – the Amica show on Oct 7th, spearheaded by Leslie Rutledge and a chance to show quilts you have already made and/or shown for a good cause. And our bi-annual Guild show in June 2016.

Welcome back.

Welcome back!

Fall is a time for getting back into our normal routines. With such a beautiful summer and all that great weather I am hoping you were able to get away to enjoy some down time with family and friends. Now it’s time to spend some time with your quilting friends.

I hope to see a lot of you at the September meeting. We are always delighted to see returning members and have new members join us. The registration fee for non-registered but returning guild members is $55.00 for the year. Only new members will be prorated to $27.50 for the remainder of the year.

We currently have 130 registered members and we had 70 members in attendance along with 4 guests at our June Guild meeting. Three of those guests were here for the Sue Spargo workshop which was to be held later that week. The door prizes were won by Carol Hill and Annette Wilson Blair.

Be sure to sign in and be wearing your nametag in order to claim your door prize, should your name be drawn. Nametags are available, if you forgot to bring yours, and are $1.00 each at the membership table.

Should you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.
