Workshop: Circles, Circles, Circles (Terry Aske)

Do you love the look of circles in quilts? But are you intimidated by sewing curves?  Me too! I use a variety of techniques to create my circle quilts that are simple, easy and effective.

The workshop will cover:

  • an easy method to draw a circle any size
  • making and using freezer-paper templates
  • how to create accurate circles using a freezer paper pattern and flat seam sewing
  • circles with raw edges, covered with bias tape, couching or decorative stitching
  • circles with turned-under edges, which are topstitched in place

I will teach you to design your own 12 to 18 inch square circle block pattern. Then you will make the blocks using a variety of techniques. The blocks could become a small wall-hanging, a pillow cover, or the start of a larger quilt.

DATE: September 24/16
TIME: 10:00 am to 4:00 p.m.
LOCATION: St. Agnes Lutheran Church, 530 East 12th Street, North Vancouver
COST: $55.00

2016 Quilt Show

A huge thank you to the members who continued to register quilts between the meeting and the 31st of March. We have lots of quilts registered, Barb Brawn has seen all of the photos and says the show will be amazing!

Info from Committee Members:

Barb Brawn – Registration

  • 235 quilts have been registered!  (and a few more coming in the mail)
  • at the April & May meetings, I will have a printed list of quilts registered so you can check your quilt names, etc.  Really need to keep track of this info for making your quilt label.
  • if you need to withdraw a quilt, please let me (BARBARA BRAWN) know!  I need to know for quilt drop-off in June.  I will forward the info to the appropriate people on the committee executive.
  • any questions about hanging your quilt should be addressed to Leslie Forbes.
  • many thanks to all that helped with in-person registration.
  • I will be looking for more volunteers for quilt drop-off and pick-up at the next two meetings.

Carol and Leslie – Hanging

The guild’s stocks of dowels will be available, at the APRIL meeting only, on a first come first served basis. Be sure to measure your quilt so you know what length of dowel you require – remember only quilts 48” or less in width need a dowel.  There will also be assistance available to cut dowels (your own or one obtained from the guild) and insert screw hooks for those of you who require it.  Please be sure to arrive early to the meeting if you want to take advantage of this service.

Krista – Boutique

Are you busy making items to sell in our show boutique? I hope so! LGQG is well known for our incredible show AND the quality of goods made by our talented members. Every show we are able to stock a beautiful boutique and I look forward to doing the same this June.  Please have a read of the boutique rules (no food items, please!) and fill out your inventory sheets PRIOR to delivering your goods at the same time you deliver your quilts for the show. Both sheets are posted on the QUILT SHOWS page of our website. Here’s a quick link to the inventory sheet:
https://lionsgatequiltersguild.com/quilt_shows/boutique_inventory.pdf
Every item you deliver for sale must have a price tag attached. The easiest way to do this is use tiny safety pins and string tags (stickers often fall off). Your set your own prices.  I will bring some string tags and pins to the next meetings for anyone having difficulty sourcing these.
Here are some suggestions for you enthusiastic makers: knit dish cloths, knit baby clothes, pin cushions, stuffed toys, place mats, napkin sets, seasonal table runners/wall hangings, baby quilts, tote bags, needle books, zipper pouches, drawstring bags (think reusable gift bags for birthday/Christmas), quilting related jewelry, photo greeting cards, scissor keepers, bookmarks, wallets/purses, notion holders for mugs, notebook covers, tea cozies, tea wallets, make-up kits, crayon/coloured pencil/marker rolls.
If you have display ideas (baskets, boxes, shelves, quilt rack) let me know. We have some wooden boxes, but if you are making small things, a container to keep them nicely together would help out.
Please contact me if you have any questions krista.hennebury@shaw.ca

Vicki – Volunteers

Our show is fast approaching!! I have most of your volunteer forms and will be collating them this month. If you have missed handing yours in, please just call or email me shequilts@hotmail.com with your availability and I will slot you in.

If you have already given me your form, a huge thank you for making my job so much easier. If your circumstances have changed since you have handed in your form, just let me know and we can work something out I will have each volunteer’s assignments ready to give out at the May meeting. If you are unable to attend, please ask a friend to pick yours up for you. This saves me many phone/emails after the meeting, thanks!

Karen – Education

We are looking for members to demo techniques if you have a skill that you would like to share at the show please call or see me or Helen at the meeting.

Linda Heese – Publicity

The lawn signs will be available for pick-up at both the April and May meetings (in case some people will be away in May).  The signs should go up on May 26 and be taken down Saturday after the show or on Sunday.

Please place as many signs as possible on your lawn and on the lawns of family and friends.  We have permission to post signs at specific places in North and West Van but these places are very restricted.  We need to see lots of signs up at the end of May!

Our large banners will be on the Delbrook Park fence and on the Harry Jerome overpass.

The show posters and bookmarks will also be available at both meetings.  Spread the show info as far and wide as possible.  Emails are going out now to the other guilds on our list, also to quilt shops – plus posters to the Vancouver shops in late May.  Show information is also going to senior centres, North Shore lodges and schools with Home Economics programs.

At the end of May we need to have posters on bulletin boards everywhere – libraries, rec centres, coffee shops – please think of good locations and help get posters up.

As always my thanks to my committee for their hard work and support and to you for creating the beautiful quilts that make our show so wonderful.

Just keep quilting!
Dianne

2016 Raffle Quilts

Hope you are doing well in selling Raffle Quilt tickets and promoting our upcoming Show!

Again in April, we will have books of raffle tickets for Guild member to buy, for advance sales to your family and friends.

Tickets will be sold in books of 15 tickets, at a cost of $25.00.  The ticket price is 3 tickets for $5.00.  So that means you only have to sell your book of 15 tickets to 5 individuals (3 tickets for $5.00) and your book is complete!

As done in previous years, the member buys the book of tickets up front for $25.00, sells the tickets (now this money is yours) and returns the stubs for the draw.  We will keep track of the members name and the ticket books.

Please return your completed book of stubs to the Raffle Quilt Committee at our monthly meetings.  Please ensure all stubs are returned to the Raffle Quilt Committee for the draw, by the end of show to ensure all tickets are entered into the draw on June 11.

In May and/or June, we will be selling Raffle tickets at Lion’s Gate Hospital.  We are looking for some Guild members to assist us.   Please sign up at the Raffle Quilt table if you can help, or e-mail one of us personally!

Remember, all proceeds from the sale of the Raffle tickets goes to our Community Quilts Program.

So remember to bring either some cash or personal cheque to purchase your raffle tickets!!  Thanking you in advance.

New in the Library: Lines and Inspiration

We have four new books on order for the April meeting. They are:

library1Lines by Design Quilts: 17 Projects Featuring the Innovative Designs of Esch House Quilts
Author Debbie Grifka is a designer, teacher and blogger from Ann Arbor, Michigan. This book is full of modern, geometric quilts using lots of solids and some prints. The emphasis is (obviously) on lines, but not all straight. There are some great graphic curvy designs too. Techniques include piecing, machine appliqué and bias appliqué.

library2You Inspire Me to Quilt: Projects from Top Modern Designers Inspired by Everyday Life
This is Canadian quilter Cheryl Arkison’s most recent book. (We also have Sunday Morning Quilts (co-author with Amanda Jean Nyberg) and A Month of Sundays in the library.) She shows how to take ideas from people, places, and things to original design concepts. She includes quilt ideas from designers including Jen Carlton-Bailly, Cynthia Frenette (from Abbotsford!), Carolyn Friedlander, Andrea Harris, Rossie Hutchinson, Heather Jones, Amanda Jean Nyberg, and Blair Stocker.

library3I find that one of the hardest parts of quilting is the inspiration – I can stare at a sandwiched quilt for a looooonngg time, wondering where to start. Shape by Shape Free-Motion Quilting is a recent book by Angela Walters, full of ideas for quilting motifs. It is divided into three sections: Blocks, Negative Space, and Borders, and each section is broken down into block shapes with lots of ideas for filling them up with machine quilting. Lots of inspiration! If this one is good I’ll get the second volume (Shape by Shape, Collection 2).

T-shirt quilts are not my favourites. However, I have found that when non-quilters find out I am a quilter, the first thing they say is “I want to make my daughter’s baby clothes/teenager’s team t-shirts/brother’s Harley t-shirts into a quilt. Can you do that?” Some day I am going to be talked into it.  Terrific T-Shirt Quilts (Karen Burns) shows you how to deal with the challenging fabrics in tiny infant tees, sweatshirts, sports jerseys, and super-stretchy dancewear using interfacing and zigzag seaming. It also shows you how mix and match different sizes and shapes of t-shirt blocks for pleasing designs.

I’m will have the library questionnaire ready for you at this meeting. Are there any books you’d like to see in the library? Are there any topics related to quilting that we should cover? Please think about these questions and bring your input to the meeting.

Please keep sending your suggestions to librarian@lionsgatequilters.com. You can also email a request to reserve a book. (Browse our library listings at: https://lionsgatequiltersguild.com/library/.)

Don’t forget to bring back your overdue books! And remember, there is a $1 fine per book per month. All fines collected go into the budget to buy new.

From Your President

Thanks to everyone who came out to support the AGM.  The business portion of the meeting was over in record time!  It seemed like almost everyone enjoyed the song writing and singing of Cathy Miller and her husband.  It was fun to join in songs about quilting, using known acronyms, and we were provided a glimpse into her quilting style as seen through the trunk show.   Penny Dyer won the 50:50 draw, receiving $44 of the $88 raised.

I am pleased to welcome the following people to the Executive:

  • Suzanne Patchell in her new role as Vice President
  • Suzanne (Sue) Forshaw as Treasurer
  • Anne O’Brien as Newsletter Editor
  • Laurel Hickey in her new role as Programs Coordinator (assisted by Norine McCaffrey)
  • Paula Bohan as Librarian and
  • Sonia Milanez in her new role as a Member-at-Large.

The other Executive members are continuing in the second year of a two year term.

March 3-5 saw many members contributing their talents to Community Quilts.  The efforts of the Committee are significant in making the days so easy in which to participate.  I appreciated being able to pick up a pre-cut quilt, begin sewing and even leave my trusty Featherweight machine overnight. Coffee, tea and sweets were always ready and we were able to order lunch.  Kudos to Anita Jones Gould and everyone on the Community Quilts committee for their ongoing effort and dedication.  For those of you who could not make it, Community Quilts has kits available at our guild meetings.  Your efforts in creating these quilts will result in bringing comfort to others.  I know that Anita is looking for others to join her Committee.  Do volunteer!

Once again, a reminder to bring in your registration forms for the quilt show and quilt show volunteer submissions. All quilts must be registered by March 31st.

June is almost here.

HAPPY EASTER!!

Spring is in the air and has been for some time.  My camelias and daffodils have finished blooming and my rhododendrons are not far behind.  Before it gets too warm we need to take advantage of this cooler weather to finish our quilts for the show.

We had 73 members in attendance at the February meeting. Currently we have 112 new or renewed members as of the February meeting.  You must have renewed your membership by March 31st in order to enter a quilt in the quilt show.  Our membership forms are on our website, can be typed on and then printed off to be brought along with your cheque to the March meeting.

Your membership cards and quilt show tickets will be available to be picked up at the March meeting.  The new membership list will be emailed out with the April newsletter.  If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at:    membership@lionsgatequiltersguild.com

Remember to wear your nametag in order to win a door prize.  Congratulations to our February winners:  Karen Marshall and Marsha Mac Kay.  If you forget your nametag I will have sticky tags for a donation of $1.00.

The Membership Renewal form can be found on our web site.

Happy Quilting!

March Trunk Show: Terry Aske

Thanks to the efforts of our out-going Programs team, we have a full spring lineup of trunk shows, from modern and traditional to math. Yes, fun quilty math.

MARCH: Terry Aske
Terry’s trunk show illustrates her delight in design and the often unpredictable creative process. Her art quilts and modern quilts use a variety of techniques: machine-piecing, fusible appliqué, thread-sketching, and free-motion-quilting. She has been published in well-known quilting magazines and shown quilts in many national and international exhibits and shows.
