Christmas Quilts Delivered

cq_2015janHappy New Year, everyone.

We had a busy December. On December 8 we finally delivered 29 single bed quilts to the New Hope Center at Lions Gate Hospital, and I apologize for not taking a picture of the piles on their dining room tables but they will do much to brighten and jazz up the plain rooms. They were received with profuse thanks by Joanne McClelland of the Lions Gate Foundation. On December 19 we delivered 10 Christmas themed quilts to LGH Intensive Care Nursery which were gladly received by staff, who stated they would let the parents of the twins and premies in residence have their pick. We started giving baby Christmas quilts in 2013, so this was our second year for this donation.

Please remember to mark your calendar for Community Quilt Days. Thursday March 5 is ‘set up’ day with some precutting and kit making. Sewing, layering, and more kit-making days are Friday March 6, 9:30-5 and Saturday March 7, 9:30-3. All help gratefully accepted, a most pleasant and helpful way to get to know the other guild members and see the wonderful quilts we create. We will have signup sheets at the January and February meetings. Hope you can join us!

Off (North) Shore Baby Quilts Project 2014

On October 16th I received an email from Brenda Acosta, an Outreach Worker with Burnaby Family Life’s Pre & Postnatal Services. This is some of what she wrote: “We have a program for Babies (under 6 months) & Mothers who are struggling with multiple barriers. We also have our Pregnancy Outreach Program for pregnant women. We are a support group for residence of Burnaby and New Westminster. We offer a nutritious lunch and educational talks each week for our clients and most importantly it is a way for our clients to form new supports with one another. Most of our clients are low-income, single parenting, isolated, in an abusive relationships and often our clients have multiple barriers. We have approximately 80 wonderful clients per week.”

babyquilts1I talked to Brenda the next morning. In her email she had asked if our guild could donate some quilts to the women she worked with. She had been to our quilt show in June and she was very impressed with what she saw. She told me that when she gave birth to her son 18 years ago a friend had given her a baby quilt, which she says her son still has on his bed. She was very touched, and she wanted her clients to have that same kind of experience. I said I would see what I could do. At our October Guild meeting I was given 3 baby quilts. I want to emphasize that this project was NOT to take away from our own Community Quilts Program but to add to it.

babyquilts2.pngI contacted the other two quilt guilds on the North Shore and I talked it up with a couple of small quilting groups I meet with during the month. I mentioned it to a friend in Port Moody who is not a quilter but did have a friend who was a quilter, and that friend donated 3 baby quilts. I started to get emails about quilt donations from all over the lower mainland and a couple of quilts came from Nanaimo. There were quilts from Port Moody, Maple Ridge, Vancouver and of course the North Shore. They came from everywhere. It was raining quilts!!

Forty-one days later on Sunday December 7th, Brenda came to my house and collected 49 quilts which I had piled up on a table. It didn’t look like 49 quilts but they weighed what 49 quilts would weigh. The following Friday, December 12th, I met Brenda in Burnaby and gave her another 9 quilts, making it a grand total of 58 quilts. She had asked for 40.

Thank you everyone who participated in this off the North Shore Baby Quilts Project. I have a very strong feeling that I will be doing this again. Brenda wants to have coffee soon.

From the President

I don’t think that I have ever seen such a beautiful array of colours for sale as I did at our October meeting. The goods for sale were an astounding array of threads and fabrics but mostly threads. Wow !! Carola Russell was very entertaining as she demonstrated many ways to make quick and easy quilts along with handy, dandy tips. Fortunately, our guild was able to offer up a mobile design wall. Mind you the design wall, in the form of Inge Grootendorst, did volunteer on our behalf and she was professional, obliging and was not easily embarrassed by all of the attention to the square of fabric fronting her bosom. Thank you Inge for being such a good sport.

And I want to thank guild members for being such good sports in moving from one line to another without any complaints during our break. We had the refreshments line up, the looking to purchase goods line up and then the actual line up to pay for your purchases. It all went very smoothly and we were only 10 minutes late leaving the Hall. If you see Stephen Smith, the church caretaker, before or after our meeting please thank him for all of the work he does for us. He is always accommodating and rarely complains even if we are late and therefore he is late getting home.

We have another opportunity to shop at our November meeting and we usually take this time of year to allow some time for socializing. So, after the business and Show and Tell we shall have our break and the tables of “as good as new” items shall be revealed. If you want to reserve a table or two for the evening please do so immediately through Genevieve Tobin. And if you have been baking up a storm getting ready for some festive celebrations please feel free to bring along some treats to our meeting. Last month we had a lovely assortment of goodies. Thank you to those who remember to treat us.

If you have spent some money on behalf of the guild you must complete and give our Treasurer, Suzanne Patchell, an Expense Submission Form by the November meeting.

Elections and our annual AGM are happening in February so please consider volunteering your time for one of the following positions: President, Secretary, Workshops Co-ordinator, Membership Co-ordinator and Member-at Large.

I want to give a huge thank you to members who have already given me baby quilts and promised me baby quilts to be donated by Friday December 12th to Brenda Acosta, an Outreach Worker in Burnaby. Brenda is working with pregnant women and young mothers. To date I have 27 quilts (16 physically present in my house) and I just know that I will be able to deliver the 40 quilts she hesitatingly asked for.

Remember all the usual items for our next meeting: name tags, mugs, cash and cheque book and Show and Tell and any treats you would like us to test for you.

See you on November 25th.

Happy Quilting
Betty

“Good as New” Sale in November

We have 16 tables booked, so are looking forward to a good sale. If the sellers would come early, set up, and cover their wares with a sheet or other fabric for the business part of meeting. We will have tea, and then the sale (no speaker). For the rest of us, we should bring money and prepare to shop!

December: No meeting.
January: Maureen Wood

Membership

November is our last meeting of the year. It is a time to think of renewal for 2015. Look for the renewal form on our website in the New Year. This form can be typed on, then printed and brought to the guild meeting or mailed to the guild mailbox – the address is on the form. It cannot be saved. This form will also be attached to the January newsletter.

The guild currently has 134 registered members. We had 89 members present at our October meeting and we welcomed 2 guests. The guild also welcomed 3 new members.

Be sure to sign in and be wearing your nametag in order to claim your door prize, should your name be drawn. Nametags are available, if you forgot to bring yours, and are $1.00 each at the membership table.

Should you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.

Happy Quilting!

Library: Have Yourself a Quilty Christmas

It’s hard to believe that this will be the last meeting of the year. I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to answer our survey and to send us suggestions for the library. Keep them coming!

Please don’t forget to return any books you’ve borrowed – we’re having a book sale this month so we’re not lending out any more books (with the exception of Christmas books). The sale will include quilt books, embroidery books, stencils, quilting tools, and more.

Here are some Christmas-themed books you might want to borrow:

Quilting Tips: Cookie Cutters

With their simple bold shapes, cookie cutters make excellent templates for both appliqué and the final quilting. And of course you can have your quilt and eat it too — make quilt-themed cookies by choosing your ‘fabrics’ and block patterns and then topping sugar or gingerbread cookies with royal icing or rolled fondant to recreate them. How about a gift basket filled with a set of gingerbread man appliqué mug rugs, patchwork gingerbread man cookies, and a jar of hot cocoa mix… mmmm.

For more inspiration, these cookies are beyond cute:
