From the President

We had a great June Social Evening. Going by comments from the Executive and other members, the Mug Rug Swap and our Mystery Quilt Day Show and Tell were the highlights of the evening. My mug rug is too pretty for me to put my mug on! The food was great and the coffee/tea line did start to move a little faster once we reconfigured the set up. Thank you to The Creative Edge Quilting and Sewing Store for donating many prizes used in the Quilt-O Game. We have a couple still left which Membership will use as door prizes.

During the summer Cops Days were filled with very busy quilters. Take a look at the schedule and think about joining that group. It is a great place to get ideas and some extra help.

September has always felt like the month of beginnings for me. So, when I think of September I think about our quilt year and all of the great programs and workshops happening over the fall, winter and spring months culminating in our Quilt Show in June 2012. Wow, the year is just going to fly by.

Dianne Ritter has written her first report in regards to the Quilt Show and is in need of just one more person to round out the Quilt Show Committee. Please read her report and give a serious thought to volunteering yourself or yourself and a friend to fill that last position. It does look like a fun bunch of women to work with.

I look forward to seeing all of your tanned faces on the 27th of September. Please remember your name tag, mug, show and tell, cheque book for workshops and cash for the 50/50 draw.

Happy Quilting,
Betty

Featured Speaker: Terry Aske

Terry Aske (New Westminster) is the featured speaker at our next meeting on September 27.

Terry’s journey into art quilts began 13 years ago when, in 1998, a friend invited her to take a one-day quilting course. After many years of dabbling in various creative activities such as beading, drawing, painting, knitting and sewing, Terry had finally found an artistic medium that fascinated and inspired her. She soon discovered the work of other art quilters and started designing her own quilts. The design and construction of fabric-based art has become her passion.

Terry loves to use interesting and often bright fabrics to create unique designs. When she started quilting she was in a “geometric” phase, but moved on to a “nature” phase. She has recently begun to experiment with re-interpreting photos in fabric. Terry exhibits her quilts in shows and on the internet.

She has an online shop at etsy.com (http://www.etsy.com/people/TerryAskeArtQuilts), which gives her an outlet for sharing her passion and getting direct feedback on her creations. Terry also creates commissioned pieces. When not creating quilts, Terry can usually be found prowling the local forests and gardens for design ideas.

Leaf Printing with Hattie Hunter

On Saturday, September 10th we enjoyed Hattie’s “Leaf Printing”workshop. Thank you, Hattie, for a great opportunity to learn how you created those amazing leaf quilts and wall hangings that we have all enjoyed seeing in our Quilt Shows and as several people said, “the chance to play.”

Workshop: Jelly Rolls in Paradise

Who among us can honestly say that we have never bought a jelly roll and then don’t know what to do with it? Or wished we did buy a luscious one we saw? Well, this is your chance to make it into a quilt top – or your excuse to finally buy one, of course, to make on your own. We’ll share patterns and ideas, and get started on that jelly roll quilt. You can come with an idea, or just with a jelly roll and some yardage. The day will start with a “Jelly Roll Show and Tell.” This is a fun, no-pressure social day, with lunch included. Hosted by Carol Piercy.

DATE: Saturday, January 21, 2012
TIME: 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
PLACE: St. Stephen’s Church Mountain Highway & 27th Avenue, North Vancouver
COST: To be determined

Workshop: Borders, Bindings, and Sleeves (Carol Piercy)

A how-to class in choosing borders, attaching borders, making, attaching and finishing binding and hanging sleeves. Make sure your quilts hang straight at the show!

We’ll cover border ideas, multiple borders, and mitered borders and finish a small (very small!) quilt top with a main panel, mitred borders, bindings, a sleeve and a simple but classy-looking label. This can be a small wall hanging or just a sample. Bring any quilt tops or ideas that you are having trouble deciding on a border for!

DATE: Saturday, November 19, 2011
TIME: 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
PLACE: St. Andrew’s and St. Stephen’s Church, 2641 Chesterfield, North Vancouver
COST: $40.00

Workshop: Turning Leaves (Bonnie Hwang)

Bonnie’s love of Modern Art and love of nature has greatly influenced her quilting and can be seen through her incredible use of colour and distinctive designs.

The freehand cut curve technique produces an inimitable freeform leaf design. The offset contrasting background adds a dynamic quality to the wall hanging. Slender stems that separate the coordinating leaf fabrics add an additional challenge taking this quilt from a beginner to an intermediate level.

Rescheduled from April. Workshop is full.

DATE: Saturday, October 1, 2011
TIME: 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
PLACE: St. Agnes Church, 530 East 12th , North Vancouver
COST: $50 (includes $10 pattern fee)

Quilt Show Challenge: “In the Gloaming”

The theme for the challenge for the 2012 quilt show is “in the gloaming.”

Challenge packets cost $5.00 and will be available at the June meeting. There are only 50 packets so be sure to get yours in June. It would be helpful if you bring correct change for your purchase.

Quilt Show 2012

It is that time again; time to start planning for our biannual Album of Quilts show in June of 2012. I am pleased to announce that we have once again secured Delbrook Community Center as our venue. The dates for the show are Friday June 8th and Saturday June 9th.

Most of the Quilt Show team from 2010 have volunteered to organize the show again. I am truly thankful for their willingness to participate in organizing what is sure to be a wonderful event.

Your 2012 Quilt Show Committee is made up of the following members:

  • Yours Truly – Show Coordinator
  • Rebecca Skiffington – Treasurer
  • Pam Cave – Merchant Mall
  • Krista Hennebury and Marsha McKay – Boutique
  • Jo-Ann Lee – Education
  • Vicky Digby – Volunteers
  • Elaine Fjoser – Registration
  • Andrea Cowie – Quilt Descriptions
  • Trudy Jaskela – Tea Room
  • Carol Piercy – Quilt Show Set-up/Take-down
  • PUBLICITY – ?????????

As you can see, the one position that needs to be filled is Publicity. This is an essential role to ensure a successful show and requires someone who will gather a committee, delegate responsibilities and ensure that the show is well advertised. I have done this job before and can tell you that it is not difficult. By the time the show date arrives the job is all but complete. Please consider taking on this role and being part of our dynamic and fun loving team.

Elaine will take care of registration for 2012 but wants to pass the job on to someone else for 2014. If you are interested and would like to work with a very skilled mentor before taking on the role please contact me.

Lorna and Marilyn have decided to hang up their hats after many years of looking after our boutique. They have done a stellar job and leave large shoes to fill. Our heartfelt thanks go to Lorna and Marilyn for the wonderful job they have done in the past.

There will be further bulletins in regard to registration deadlines etc. in October after we have had a planning meeting. In the meantime start working on those show quilts!
