Workshops

Not to brag, but don’t we put on an excellent quilt show?  The quilts were awesome, and so many people helped to put the show on.  It was a treat to see some quilts from workshops we have held, as well as our January Fun Day!  Many thanks to all who contributed!!

We still have a few places left in two fall workshops: Circles, Circles, Circles! with Terry Aske, and Landscape with Susan Jensen.  Please register if you are interested, as we will be advertising outside of our guild after the June meeting.

Community Quilts

Thank you to everyone who made a quilt for us. It was great to have some community quilts to line the entrance and tea hall at the show. We received lots of positive feedback on them. One delighted mom brought her Christmas baby and the quilt she received and wanted to thank the person who made it. I said I couldn’t tell who had made it but we were all glad she felt so strongly about thanking us. We are now working on our next collection so please if you are looking for a summer project pick up a quilt kit from the Community quilt table. I also have batting and if you need a piece please contact me with a size either by phone or email to communityquilts@lionsgatequiltguild.com and I will bring it to the meeting.

2016 Raffle Quilt Winners

Two ladies on the North Shore won our 2016 Raffle Quilts.

raffle2

Our first winner is Maebritte Jeffels, who is 95 years young, living at Evergreen House and is still as bright as a new penny.  She was very happy with her new quilt and informed us, she has never won anything like this before.  Maebritte bought her ticket, when we were selling tickets at Lions Gate Hospital and wanted to support our Community Quilts program.  She sees the quilts donated by our Guild and the joy they bring to the residents at Evergreen House.

raffle1The second winner is Katherine Bennett, who lives in Lynn Valley.  Katherine bought her ticket from Katherine Gillis of our Guild and had not viewed the quilts prior to winning.  She was very pleased when Suzanne delivered the white modern quilt to her home, and loved the back as much as the front.

Both, very pleased ladies, are pictured with their winning quilts!

Raffle tickets sales raised over $3,000.00 (net) for the Community Quilts programs.  A BIG thank you to all the Guild members who helped to sell raffle tickets to their friends and family.  Guild member tickets sales represented 54% of total tickets sold.

The Raffle Quilt Committee, of Betty Clarke, Suzanne Patchell, Norine McCaffrey and myself, are now retiring.  We thoroughly enjoyed our time on this Committee for the past four years and our best wishes go out to the next group.

Library News

Hi quilty friends,

I’m still coming down off the high of our quilt show! I was only able to be there on Saturday, but I had the best day! The show was beautiful. I thought the quilts were stunning, and I received the same feedback from many of our guests. It was so nice to hear that, because sometimes quilting is a bit of a solitary pursuit. It was nice to see so many friends and family attend, and be inspired by our work. I think we will have a few new members at our September meeting.

I won’t be at the June meeting, because I will be in Ontario for a wedding. I’m sorry to miss the meeting, and I’m very grateful that Jo Ann Lee has agreed to take on the library and sale duties for the meeting.

Modern Selvage Quilting: Easy-Sew Methods 17 Projects Small to Large by Riel Nason arrived a couple days after the last meeting, and it looks great. Unfortunately, it can’t be taken out just yet …

All library books must be returned at the June meeting, so we can do an inventory over the summer. Please look around and find them now, so don’t forget to bring them to the meeting. If you can’t make it to the meeting, please have a friend drop them off for you.  Remember, there is a $1 fine per book per month. All fines collected go into the budget to buy new books. I will be calling to track down books that are not returned, and I’d rather not store them in my apartment for the summer.  Don’t make me call you!

We will be having a SALE of donated books and magazines at the June meeting. Now is the time to go though your quilting library and pass on the books that no longer inspire you. Books will be sold for a donation of $1, and magazines for $0.25, with all proceeds going to buy new books for the library. (If your donated books don’t sell, please take them home at the end of the meeting as we don’t have storage space to keep them for the next sale.)

I will be adding new books to our library for the September meeting, and I will add them to our listings as soon as I order them. Browse our library listings at https://lionsgatequiltersguild.com/library/. You can email me at librarian@lionsgatequilters.com to make suggestions or to place a hold on a book for September.

Have a wonderful summer!
Paula

From Your President

Many thanks to all the guild members for their support and encouragement as I chaired the April guild meeting. It’s a challenge to attempt to fill in for our president as she recuperates from knee replacement surgery but, thanks to her advance preparation of agendas, I think things are going quite smoothly. Bena ‘s recovery is going very well but physio is challenging and exhausting. With her dedication and focus on regaining mobility, her progress is well ahead of schedule. She and I are planning to get together for coffee or lunch one day this week so I will let her know we all wish her the best.

I know that all Canadians are horrified by the wildfire situation in Fort McMurray and feel heartsick for all the residents and want to do something to help. As quilters, our immediate response is to make and donate quilts. By looking on Facebook or by Googling ‘Fort McMurray fire quilts’, there are many sites organizing such efforts. By the time you read this, I hope you have received the email about the coordination efforts of Heather at Quilters Connection Magazine. However, CQA has advised that at present, the most effective way to help is by making a financial contribution to www.redcross.ca. CQA will continue to reach out to their contacts and as soon as they find out that quilts are ready to be distributed, we will be advised. I’m sure many of us would like to get busy quilting so we are ready to contribute when the time is right.

From all the feedback I’ve heard, we all enjoyed the April program with Judy Villett. As someone new to quilting, I was intrigued by her ‘colour wash technique’ – maybe this might be something of interest for a future workshop. Let Jane Andrew know if this or some other project would be something to consider for next season.

Right now, I think we are all focusing on preparing for the Quilt Show. June 10 will be here before we know it – by working all together we can make the show a great success and a wonderful event to showcase the guild. Don’t forget to sell your raffle tickets – the proceeds being the major source of funding for the Community Quilts program.

In April, Debbie Barrett won the 50/50 – $51.50 (with the same amount going to Community Quilts).

I hope to see everyone at the May meeting where we will showcase many of the Community Quilts made this year and honour the volunteers who give so generously of their time.

Our next COPS Day is Saturday, June 4 – the last one before the quilt show. Future dates are September 10, October 1, October 29, and November 26.

WHERE: Highlands United Church, 3255 Edgemont Blvd, North Vancouver, BC

If the COPS Day goes ahead, drop-ins will be welcome. April Program Report

For our April meeting, we welcomed Judy Villett. I thought her talk beautifully paced and entertaining, and with a clear theme of ‘place’ carrying through in her work. She had me with the first quilt shown, from when she lived in Edmonton: tire and boot tracks over the kind of dirty end-of-winter snow I remember so well from living in Calgary. Even some of her colour theory quilts showed geographic-like stratification, and were playful besides – in tubes and narrow panels and uneven edged rainbows. Her move to Vancouver – after Hawaii – gave us a brutally honest first west coast quilt showing the street she moved to and the dreariness of our winter rain and grey days. Spring brought cherry blossom quilts though and amazing colour-wash flower gardens and flags, and as the last quilt, a rainbow of Vancouver seasons in narrow panels. From Judy: “I really enjoyed the crowd and the evening!”

In other news, Jane Andrew and I attended the Guild Gathering a few weekends ago. Among the topics of discussion was the importance of community-building both for members and the community at large, and of mentoring through sharing our skills and encouraging new members and new quilters. Ideas on how we can accomplish these goals are welcome. Also mentioned was that Canada is celebrating the big 150 next year – we’ll be looking at ways our guild can participate, including any funding that might be available.

May Trunk Show: Jane Cannon

Beginning with her mother’s 1933 Nancy Page quilt and her own wall hanging interpretation of the pattern, Jane’s trunk show “My Quilting Origins and Journey” follows her development as a quilter and the special features and challenges each quilt presented. In 2008, she started a series of math quilts: number sequences, tangrams, pentominoes, MC Escher-type tessellations, and so forth; the tessellation technique was published in the fall 2015 issue of Quilter’s Connection.
