Mark Your Calendars: Quilt Show 2016

The venue for our quilt show has been booked. The show will run June 10–11, 2016 . Initial set up and quilt drop off will take place on Wednesday June 8th. Barbara Beatty has a great idea for our 2016 guild challenge. Watch for news of that coming in September. Challenge entries will be displayed at the show. Your Quilt Show Committee is looking forward to our second show in our new venue. We can’t wait to see your amazing creations hanging in that space!

Membership

We currently have 125 members in our guild and had 83 in attendance at the April meeting. If you know someone who has been a member in the past, remind them to renew their membership. Although this is not a quilt show year, in order for a member to show quilts in the show of June 2016, a member must be in good standing as of the beginning of December 2015. So why not renew sooner than later and enjoy the benefits of membership.

If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to email me.

Remember to bring your nametag in order to win a door prize. Congratulations to our April winners: Edna Simpson and Rita Douglas. Nametags are available if you forget to bring yours and are $1.00 each.

Have a happy month of stitching!

The Amsterdam Quilt

amsterdamSeveral years ago Cedarview Lodge in North Vancouver received quilts from Community Quilts. They raffled one of them in order to raise money towards a new van for their facility. Their raffle netted $300. Last year they asked if we could give them another quilt which they would raffle to add to their Van fund. Fore Shore Quilters (a satellite group of LGQG formed 12 years ago) decided to take on this project.

The pattern chosen was a free pattern from Cloud9 fabrics titled the Amsterdam Quilt. We decided to each make two blocks so we would have enough blocks for two quilts. A palette of Batik for the tulips and leaves with a white background was chosen. Helen Jorgensen quilted the quilt to be given to Cedarview and Karen Munro did the binding.

The members of Fore Shore Quilters are Anita Jones-Gould, Anne Pelton, Anne Read, Betty Clark, Dianne Ritter, Glennis Wilkinson, Helen Jorgensen, Jan Callow, Joan Herrin, Karen Munro, Laurie Cunningham, Rebecca Skiffington, Trudy Jaskela, Susan Lum and Vicky Digby.

The second quilt top was given to Community Quilts. Rita Douglas is quilting it and it will eventually be given to a charitable organization as a raffle quilt.

Community Quilts on Display

I’m sure most people gave up counting the number of community quilts shown at our April meeting—we were constantly unfolding, holding up, folding and packing away again. By special request, most were for the Intensive care nursery at LGH, thirty-eight quilts in total. The five larger bed quilts went to Turning Point lodge ladies recovery program. Donated quilts were accepted with heartfelt thanks. I will have some quilt kits at our next meeting and please bring in any finished quilts as we have our showing of Community Quilts in June. Please contact me if batting or backing are needed. Thank you to all for the continuing support.

Workshops

Our final workshop for the spring, Shattered Angles, is quickly approaching. We are happy to obtain sufficient enrollment to run it! An email was sent to all those registered, with the supply list. If you did not receive it and are registered, please let me know. We still have a few spots left, if you would like to join us.

There will be a questionnaire distributed at the next General Meeting, as we would like to know what topics you are interested in learning about. The next workshop is being planned for October, with registration beginning at our June meeting.

Using Your Noodle

noodleIsn’t it interesting that as quilters we find uses for items which are not labelled “quilting accessories” nor found in a quilting store? I discovered that pool noodles are a wonderful item for transporting your quilt….no folds, and the quilt travels with this light and convenient item. I roll my quilts with the face of the quilt to the outside; this way, you do not have any wrinkling of your work and the backing is adjacent to the pool noodle. Lightly tie your rolled quilt with left over fabric strips. I also buy king size pillow cases and place the rolled quilt in them for traveling.

Pool Noodles also have the advantage that they can be cut easily to any length for smaller quilted pieces and I have stored several of my quilts rolled on these noodles.

So with the swimming season fast approaching and the stores bringing in pool noodles, now is the time to purchase them in any of the colours which suit your fancy!
