May Trunk Show: Jane Cannon

Beginning with her mother’s 1933 Nancy Page quilt and her own wall hanging interpretation of the pattern, Jane’s trunk show “My Quilting Origins and Journey” follows her development as a quilter and the special features and challenges each quilt presented. In 2008, she started a series of math quilts: number sequences, tangrams, pentominoes, MC Escher-type tessellations, and so forth; the tessellation technique was published in the fall 2015 issue of Quilter’s Connection.

April Trunk Show: Judy Villett

We welcome Betty Clarke to the Programs Committee! Thank you Betty.

APRIL: Judy Villett
A fourth generation quilter, Judy’s trunk show “From Prairies to Pacific” shows how her work is influenced by where she lives, from the Alberta foothills to the west coast of BC, and combining traditional techniques and contemporary design. Her work has appeared in juried shows and solo exhibitions in Canada, the US, and Japan. She is also a CQA-certified judge. Judy will be bringing colour wheel kits and patterns, bookmarks, butterfly pins and cards for sale at the break and after the presentation, and takes cheques, cash and credit cards

March Trunk Show: Terry Aske

Thanks to the efforts of our out-going Programs team, we have a full spring lineup of trunk shows, from modern and traditional to math. Yes, fun quilty math.

MARCH: Terry Aske
Terry’s trunk show illustrates her delight in design and the often unpredictable creative process. Her art quilts and modern quilts use a variety of techniques: machine-piecing, fusible appliqué, thread-sketching, and free-motion-quilting. She has been published in well-known quilting magazines and shown quilts in many national and international exhibits and shows.

February Program Report

Our February meeting featured Cathy Miller, the singing quilter, and her husband John Bunge. Toe tapping ensued. In addition to the fun and very lively music, Cathy brought a selection of her quilts, many done on the road while travelling to their singing engagements, including one aptly named ‘Insanity’, made of quarter-inch hexagons. God help me, but I just had to count the stitches. Between eight and ten per edge. Ouch. Taking the stage with her as a memory prompt to the words of one song was the ‘Star and Plume Quilt’, the names of the 48 blocks telling the oft-violent story of Sunbonnet Sue and her intruder turned suitor. The sampler quilt proved so popular that Cathy re-drafted it as a block-of-the-month.

February’s Program: The Singing Quilter

Sing a Song of Quilting
Cathy Miller and her husband John Bunge will be our February program guests. Victoria is their home, although for the past 15 years they have spent considerable time on the road, touring the world with their music and songs about quilts and quilting. In addition to musical presentations, Cathy also does workshops and quilt cruises. At the end of 2016, they will be ‘retiring’ from their busy travel schedule to spend more time closer to home. This promises to be a special night for a fun filled performance. Don’t miss it! Feel free to bring a friend.

Coming in March: Trunk show with Terry Aske

January’s Program: Japanese Textile Techniques for Quilters

We are delighted to welcome Anita Jamieson this month. Anita has spent time in Japan learning indigo dyeing, stencilling and other techniques that apply to us as quilters. She has been quilting for over 30 years, preferring working on traditional style pieced quilts or appliqué. As well, Anita is a weaver, spins wool, cotton, and silk and knits voraciously.

Thank you to Colleen Bell, Krista Hennebury and Carol Piercy for doing mini-workshops at our September meeting. Feedback from the program was very positive and we hope to do this type of format again at a future meeting.

Dianne Stevenson will be our guest speaker for our October meeting. Dianne has taught and lectured internationally and throughout BC, and was named 2010 CQA/ ACC Quilt Teacher of the Year. Recently, some of our members enjoyed her workshop “Canadiana in Cloth”. Her trunk show “Feed Sack to Fancy Things” traces the introduction of feed sacks for commerce and the ubiquitous flour and sugar sacks in the early 1900’s.

Coming in November: The “Good as New Sale.” Reserve your table; there is no charge, but you must reserve in advance by contacting Rita Douglas. Here is your chance to sell extra fabric, sewing notions, quilting books, magazines, crafts or any other items you wish.
