Community Quilts

Thank you to all of the Guild members who attended the workshop for the terrific support you gave to Community Quilts this past weekend and the great support you have given me as president of Community Quilts over the past 4 years. I have enjoyed working on it with you and will continue to so as a Guild member. The president’s job is now in the very capable hands of Anita Jones-Gould and her committee. So, if you need batting or have a need for something relating to Community Quilts I am sure she would like to hear from you.

The May meeting of the Guild will be focusing on Community Quilts so having as many quilts back as possible would be appreciated.

2014 Raffle Quilts

For the 2014 Quilt show we have two, very different, but beautiful quilts for our draw! At the February meeting we will display the raffle quilts. Raffle tickets will be available for all of us to buy, for advance sales to our family and friends. In addition we will have pictures of each quilt for you to show the purchasers as you sell the tickets! The photos of the quilts will also be available on our website.

Tickets will be sold in books of 15 tickets and cost $25.00. All tickets are to be sold at 3 for $5.00. As done previously, the member buys the book of tickets up front for $25.00, sell the tickets (this money is now yours) and return the stubs for the draw. We keep track of member names and ticket books. Please ensure all stubs are returned to the raffle committee for the draw at the end of our show.

Help us sell raffle tickets and promote our show in June. We will have a volunteer sign-up sheet for members who would like to assist us in selling raffle tickets at other local quilt guild meetings in March/April/May and at Lion’s Gate Hospital.

Community Quilts Workshop Coming Soon

Just a reminder that the Community Quilts Workshop will be on March 6th, 7th and 8th. On the 6th we will be bringing the materials to the church for setting up and arranging the equipment for you. If you can help that day please come to the church about 10AM. If you are going to help bring things from the locker on Thursday and back to the locker on Saturday please speak to me to arrange meeting times and locations. We would also like to have people doing some fine cutting of kits, strips and charm squares to make things easier for the other two days. This year we will have some modern quilt patterns for you as well as the traditional patterns.

On Friday we will meet from 9:30 to 5 and on Saturday from 9:30 to 3 and then we will pack up. Your help on any of these days would be appreciated. Anne Read has agreed to take orders for sandwiches but you need to be at the church on Friday and Saturday by 10 to order. If you like to bake I am sure your fellow quilters would enjoy your efforts.

Hope you can make the workshop,
Rosalind

cq_2014janHappy New Year! In the attached photo you can see us being met at LGH with the 19 Christmas Quilts that the Guild made for the NICU. They were very much appreciated.

In June my term in office will be up and we are looking for a new president for Community Quilts. It would be very helpful to the person taking on the position to work along with me through the workshop period. Also I would be willing to stay on the committee through until December, but only if you wish, to get you comfortable. The term of office is 2 years but can be renewed for 2 further years if you wish.

172 Community Quilts Distributed

Thank you!

You volunteered to make a quilt or 2 for a stranger in a care facility, a nursery or a hospital. You cared enough to give of your time and talents to put a bit of colour into many lives. Because of you Community Quilts was able to give away 172 quilts this year.

44 went to L.G.H. NICU
45 to Evergreen House
29 to Kiwanis Care Centre
15 to Sage House
12 to The Women’s Hospital

The rest went to a number of agencies and families in need and we were able to add 7 more to the stash to make 18 for The Hope Centre which opens in March. We will probably have the full 26 they need by then.

Thank you again for your time, talents and the care you put into each of the quilts.

You Could Win a Quilt!

You could win a quilt at the meeting!

We are having an auction of a quilt for Guild members in June of a queen size quilt. This quilt was donated to Community Quilts but is too large for our purposes. It also has a couple of marks on the back of the quilt so we can’t donate the quilt to a society to auction off so we thought we would keep it ‘in house’ and so you will have an opportunity to own a beautiful quilt. We will sell the tickets for $2.00 each or 2 for $3.00. The proceeds will go to Community Quilts for batting which is our biggest expense.

1o Reasons to Make a Community Quilt

We have 10 quilts that have been layered ready to quilt. They will be at the June meeting so if you can possibly manage to quilt one it would be appreciated. There will also be baby and adult kits to be made up by the June meeting if possible or later if that is not possible.

I0 Top Reasons to Make a Community Quilt

  1.  It feels good to volunteer
  2. You make a difference in someone’s life
  3. You use up stash you don’t want or can use free Community Quilts material
  4. You can try something new like a new colour combination or new pattern
  5. You can practice machine quilting and it needs to be nice but not perfect
  6. If you come to the workshop you can learn from fellow quilters
  7. If you come to the workshop there is great camaraderie
  8. There is no risk on your own materials
  9. There is no cost only time spent
  10. It is fun!

If you have any quilts finished please bring them to the May or June meeting. If they only need the binding or a label you can work on it at the June meeting which is a social.

Community Quilts Workshop Thanks

Thank you to all who participated in the Community Quilts Workshop on March 8th and 9th. Thanks goes to all that transported goods from and back to the locker, baked, cut, sewed by machine and by hand, layered, ironed, hung quilts, made kits, packed up and made tea and coffee. Without you the workshop could not take place. So, be reassured you are appreciated. Thirty-four came on Friday and twenty-three came on the Saturday. A lot was accomplished and much was learned.

If you took a quilt home to finish please let me know when you need batting if you don’t already have it.

Thanks again,
Rosalind Knight

Community Quilts

Don’t forget the Community Quilts Workshop on March 8th and 9th. We are still looking for someone to do coffee and tea on the Saturday.

The workshop is held in our normal meeting location (St. Andrew’s and St. Stephen’s Church hall) with the time on Friday being 9:30 to 5 and Saturday 9:30 to 3. We will be packing up between 3 and 5. Anne Read will be taking sandwich orders for lunch on both days.

Hope to see you there.
