Quilt Show Update: One Month to Go

As I write this we are exactly one month from opening day of our show. Plans are in full swing and the committee members are hard at work taking care of the final details that make our show run so well.

I expect there are some of you who are working diligently to finish your show quilts, I know I am.  At this point all 243 registered quilts have an assigned space.  If you absolutely have to pull a quilt please let us know as soon as you possibly can so adjustments can be made.  Leslie says that we have the perfect number of quilts and the show is going to be fabulous.

Some final reminders:

Publicity:

Lawn signs – our best form of advertising – will be available at the May meeting. They should be erected May 26th and taken down late day June 11th or on June 12th. The frames are expensive to replace so please be sure to return them at either pick up or the June meeting.

Posters – Anne had sent our show poster via email. Please email it to friends and family, post it to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, print it off and display it in your vehicle window. Whatever you can do to get the message out there.

Quilts must:

  1. Have a sleeve attached by stitching. No glue or pins please
  2. Have your name and phone number on the sleeve or the label
  3. Have a dowel, complete with eye hooks, attached (for quilts 48” or less)

Drop Off:

Drop off will begin at 6:30 PM on June 8th at the southern entrance of the Sportsplex.  Please remain outside until advised that the registration team is ready for you.

Drop off will end at 8 PM.

You will be given a receipt for your quilt which you MUST present at pick up in order to collect your quilt. If someone else submits your quilts, please remember to get your receipt from them for pick up.

Please fold / roll your quilt so the label can be seen with little effort.  This is particularly important if you are bringing in quilts that belong to someone else.

We will have an area set aside for quilts needing special handling (3D, fragile, etc.).  Please remember to let us know if your quilt needs special attention.

Boutique Items/ Education Items/ Challenge Quilts:

Drop Off – Tables will be set up in the concourse to receive these items. Please drop these items off before lining up to submit your quilts.  Make sure ALL of your items are labeled.

Boutique items will be accepted at the time of Quilt Drop-Off ONLY. All items must be individually priced according to boutique instructions and accompanied by a completed and signed inventory form. If you have a number of small items, it would be helpful if you provided a complete ‘display’, like arranging your items in a basket, wooden box or display rack, if possible.

Pick Up – Tables will be set up in the concourse. Please remember to collect your belongings.

Cheques for boutique sales will be available for pick up at the June meeting

Volunteers:

  • Must check in at the volunteer table located in the center hallway just off the concourse.
  • Please arrive to check in 10 minutes before your scheduled shift

Members who have not volunteered in some capacity must use a ticket to enter the show.

Your name tag will contain two slips for voting – one for your favourite quilt and one for the CQA ribbon. The criteria for the CQA voting will be on the ballot. Please read the criteria and take the time to vote.

Members viewing:

Members will have an opportunity to view the quilts, sans public, after gallery closing on Friday evening from 5 – 6:30 PM.

Ribbons:

Voting will end at 1 PM on Saturday. Ribbons will be awarded at 2 PM.

Pick Up:

We have exactly two hours from gallery close to exit the Sportsplex. A monumental amount of work has to be completed in a short period of time.  For matters of safety and expedience please note these instructions:

If you are not directly involved in some aspect of take down please wait outside the building until 6 PM.

Pick up of quilts will begin at approx. 6PM on June 11th at the southern entrance of the Sportsplex

Remember to bring your receipts.  Quilts will NOT be returned without them.

Pick up will end at 6:45 PM sharp.  Quilts that have not been collected by 6:45 will be brought to the June meeting.

Once you have your quilts/boutique items/challenge quilt/Education items please exit the building.

Most importantly, take time to enjoy our show. Invite your friends and family, stay for tea, have fun and share your love of quilting with our guests.  We have an amazing guild filled with talented quilters and this is our time to showcase the fabulous items we create with needle and thread.

I am excited to see what we have created!

Quilt Show Coordinator

New in the Library: Selvedges, Leaders and Enders

Thank you to the members who filled out the library questionnaire at the last meeting. The information about what you want in our library will be very helpful to me when I’m searching for, and ordering, new books. I will always be open to suggestions – just email them to librarian@lionsgatequilters.com. I will have some of the questionnaires at the library table if you would like to fill it out at the next meeting. There were many positive comments about the library, and for that we have to thank Sonia Milanez and prior librarians who built this great collection!

This is the last month to take out books before the summer. All library books must be returned at the June meeting, so we can do an inventory over the summer. Don’t make me call you!

Terrific T-Shirt Quilts by Karen Burns arrived the day after the last meeting, and I have ordered four more books. Hopefully they will be here for the May meeting! The new books this month include:

library1Adventures with Leaders & Enders: Make More Quilts in Less Time! by Bonnie K. Hunter (www.quiltville.com). There were requests for scrap quilt books from the questionnaire, and Bonnie is the queen of scrap quilts. (“If a fabric is ugly, you haven’t cut it small enough.”) She is the designer of the Double Delight quilt we did as a mystery a couple of years ago. Her designs are quite traditional and piecing-heavy, and use lots of scraps!

library2The Sewing Machine Master Guide: From Basic to Expert fills in a small gap in our collection. It is an encyclopedia of sewing machines, including sections on all types of sewing machines, how they work, and buying and using a sewing machine. There is information on the history of sewing machines, how to do repairs and make adjustments and all sorts of troubleshooting.

library3Modern Selvage Quilting: Easy-Sew Methods 17 Projects Small to Large is a new book by Riel Nason, a blogger from New Brunswick (http://quispamsisquilter.blogspot.ca/). She is the queen of selvages! This book includes techniques for working with selvages and lots of projects to use them.

library4And the final new addition the library is The Quilter’s Practical Guide to Color by Becky Goldsmith. She was our headlining quilter at one of the fall workshops several years ago. The book includes colour theory and 10 projects to put the skills to use. There are photographs throughout the book, and she uses quilts from traditional and modern quilters to illustrate the ideas.

Browse our library listings at https://lionsgatequiltersguild.com/library/. You can email me at librarian@lionsgatequilters.com to place a hold on a book.

Don’t forget to bring back your overdue books! And remember, there is a $1 fine per book per month. All fines collected go into the budget to buy new books.

From Your President

I am writing this message earlier than usual.  On Monday, April 4th, I will take the next steps in my bionic reincarnation as I undergo a knee replacement.   Suzanne Patchell, our wonderful VP, has kindly agreed to step in for the next two months while I focus on recuperation.  Please give her your full support.

The response to Terry Aske’s trunk show at our March meeting was very positive.  Many of you expressed to me an interest in her circle techniques.  Our workshop coordinator, Jane Andrew is currently investigating opportunities!

At the April meeting, Suzanne will be reaching out for individuals to help Jane Andrew with workshops.  Please consider lending a hand.  At this time, there are no new workshops scheduled before the end of summer.  The Executive agreed that most members would be focused on completing projects for the Quilt Show, and June workshops are never popular.  Gardening anyone?  As always, monthly COPs days provide the camaraderie and quilting meet-ups, and of course help from quilting friends for anyone struggling to complete a project.

The Raffle quilts are beautiful!  The committee (Becky West, Suzanne Patchell, and Betty Clarke) has done an excellent job.  A reminder to pick up raffle books to sell to your friends, neighbours and co-workers.

In March Linda Dunlop won the 50/50 draw.  The total amount raised was $104.00, and Linda received $52.00.  The balance is given to Community Quilts.

Enjoy our next meeting on the 26th of April. I hope to see you soon.

COPS Days

Our next COPS Day is Saturday, June 4 – the last one before the quilt show. Future dates are September 10, October 1, October 29, and November 26.

WHEN: Saturdays, 9:30 to 4:30
WHERE: Highlands United Church, 3255 Edgemont Blvd, North Vancouver, BC

Sign up at the guild meetings is now required. If fewer than 15 people have signed up by the end of the meeting before the COPS Day, then it will be cancelled. If the COPS Day goes ahead, drop-ins will be welcome. If you are not able to come to the guild meeting and would like to sign up for a particular COPS Day, you can mail me a cheque for $15, payable to Lions Gate Quilters Guild (or LGQG), to Marsha MacKay.

Thanks,
Marsha MacKay

Programs Report

Our March speaker, Terry Aske, brought a load of quilts I wish I had quilted, and now intend to quilt, especially the circle ones which don’t require hand sewing or difficult curved piecing. Workshop please! Also intriguing were the portrait quilts, including one with her face in pink and green stripes – I’ve seen similar effects on my monitor thanks to a last-legs video card, I just never thought to make a quilt of it. Her artistry was a reminder to actively allow myself be inspired.

Judy will be bringing colour wheel kits and patterns, bookmarks, butterfly pins and cards for sale at the break and after the presentation, and takes cheques, cash and credit cards

Community Quilts

Thank you to everyone working on a quilt for us. We will be thanking our hard working committee at the May meeting and showing all newly received quilts for distribution by the summer. Quilts shown last month have gone to Lionsgate hospital to brighten up the exercise room! Evergreen Care Center  and Kiwanis care Center. We will also be hanging a few at the quilt show so please keep them coming.

Workshops

Hello Quilters,

Exciting news!  We are starting to book our workshops for next fall and winter, and the first two are going to be great!  In September, we have Terry Aske coming to teach her Circles workshop.  Terry came and did a presentation at our March Guild meeting, which was very well received.  You can have a look at some of her work on her website, www.terryaskeartquilts.etsy.com.  Then, in November, we have a Landscape class with Susan Jensen.  Sue comes to us by recommendation of one of our members, who is also an incredible art quilter.  Sue’s website, www.quiltedescapes.net, shows some of her work, or you may have seen her at the Creative Stitches show in Abbotsford this spring. Registration will be available at our April Guild meeting.
