Community Quilts

I hope everyone is looking forward to seeing all the beautiful quilts we have created, they come in all the colours of the rainbow and then some. We shall try to show them slowly enough that they can be appreciated individually. I will have a few kits if anyone is looking for a summer project or we do accept any scrappy quilts created to use up your own stash. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the meeting.

Amica Quilt Show

Oct 07, 2015 (1:00 pm to 4:00pm)

We are preparing to do a mini quilt show at Amica—Assisted Living Retirement Community located at 659 Clyde Ave in West Vancouver. We have scheduled this event to take place on Wednesday, Oct 7th from 1 to 4 pm.

Amica has committed to covering all the costs to put this show on including providing coffee, tea, cookies and all the manpower we need. They will also provide a small honorarium of approx. $150.00 to our guild. We would like to apply this to community quilts.

This event will be open to both Amica residents and the community. Amica will advertise this event in the local newspaper, etc.

We have all the volunteers we need to move forward and now need your beautiful quilts. We are looking for around 60 quilts in total, small, medium and large.

Please keep in mind these quilts cannot be quilts you plan on entering in our quilt show in 2016.

Please feel free to send me a picture and dimensions of your quilts. More details will be provided closer to the event.

Membership

It’s hard to believe that we are already nearing the end of June!! What are your plans for the summer? Are you thinking about sewing a bright summer quilt!!

We currently have 126 members in our guild. We had 77 members in attendance at the last meeting and welcomed 5 guests. Do you know someone who might be interested in quilting and would like to join us? Bring them to a meeting—the first visit is free. After that there is a $5.00 drop-in fee payable at the membership table or a membership is $55.00 a year. Please remember that the prorated rate of $27.50 is for New Members only and comes into effect September through December.

Remember to bring your name tag in order to win a door prize. Congratulations to our May winners: Kathryn Gillis and Boudina Jones. Be sure to be wearing your name tag in order to claim your door prize, should your name be drawn. Nametags are available for $1.00 each if you forget to bring your own.

If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.

Have a wonderful summer and I look forward to seeing you all in September.

Happy Stitching,

Community Quilts

Thank you to everyone who made a quilt for us. It was great to have some community quilts to line the entrance and tea hall at the show. We received lots of positive feedback on them. One delighted mom brought her Christmas baby and the quilt she received and wanted to thank the person who made it. I said I couldn’t tell who had made it but we were all glad she felt so strongly about thanking us. We are now working on our next collection so please if you are looking for a summer project pick up a quilt kit from the Community quilt table. I also have batting and if you need a piece please contact me with a size either by phone or email to communityquilts@lionsgatequiltguild.com and I will bring it to the meeting.

May Meeting Wrap-up

Krista Hennebury talked about the Modern Quilting movement and the writing of her book, Make It, Take It, showing projects from the book and selling (and signing) copies as well.

As I love going to workshops, on my to-do list before the end of summer is making the Ultimate Equipment Tote from Krista’s book (bottom photo) for my large cutting mat and rulers, all of which tend to flop around in a shopping bag while being transported.

Canadiana in Cloth

The last workshop for Canadiana in Cloth with Dianne Stevenson is in June. Over the past months, participants have created a variety of blocks with a Canadian twist, enough in some cases for a sampler quilt. From Anne Pelton: “Great series! We have all loved it.”

From the President

So inspirational! Pippa Moore dazzled our membership with her inspirational quilting journey at our April meeting and we all appreciated her discounted sales as she retires from the public quilting life. Close looks at her quilts revealed the artistry. And of course the vivid colours, and unique fabrics. We will all miss Pippa’s classes, her talks, and her insights.

I met with a consultant from Long & McQuade at the Church to review options to upgrade our microphone system. We have been looking at more powerful systems, so that those at the rear can hear. And of course, we are looking at wireless mikes. We are close to making a decision, and will likely have a new system if not by May, then by June. The new system should improve your Guild experience.

This is the season for quilt shows and art exhibits. Grab a friend, and explore! I was lucky enough to attend the Sunshine Coast Quilt show in Sechelt where the guild displayed many winning quilts from 25 years of prior shows. There were many striking examples of our craft at the Boundary Bay show. We certainly are a vibrant community.
