She will be happy to sign them too.

At our June meeting: Community Quilts and Summer Social

Featured Speaker: Pippa Moore

Pippa comes to us from Comox with an all new program— her talk will be “Improvisational Quilting, or The delight and freedom in making things up as you go along.” She will be looking at such questions as:

  • What is actually meant by improvisational quilting?
  • Why do improvised quilts appeal to us, or do they?
  • What are the roots of improvisational quilting?

A Powerpoint presentation showing work of a number of quilt artists, and a display of some of her recent improvisational work will accompany the talk.

Pippa will be bringing some patterns and fabric and some African things, all at 50% off because she is going out of business. Cash or personal cheques will be accepted.

May speaker: Krista Hennebury

Featured Speaker: Robin Fisher

“I love working with textiles, the colour, the texture, the hand. These have been a part of my life for a long time. I started out as a traditional quilter and quickly turned to art quilts as it gave me the freedom to do what I wanted and was not dictated by another person’s pattern. I color many of the fabrics that I use with dye, paint, and or any coloring device that works on textiles. Embellishment of any kind is my way to finish off the design with beading, couching, and hand or machine embroidery. I will be bringing some of my quilts that demonstrate these things.” ~ Robin Fisher

We will have tea, and then the sale (no speaker). For the rest of us, we should bring money and prepare to shop!

Featured Speaker: Shirley Prakke – My Journey

We are delighted to have Shirley Prakke do a trunk show for our September meeting. Shirley has lived most of her life in South Africa with the exception of several years in Venezuela. She and her husband moved to Vancouver 2 years ago to be closer to their Canadian children and grandchildren. Shirley started quilting in the 1980’s but, has always had a passion for all forms of needlework, colour and pattern. She enjoys hand work with a particular enthusiasm for paper piecing and Mola appliqué. She has taught courses in basics to advanced patchwork, appliqué, mola appliqué and quilting. A blue ribbon winner at our quilt show this year, she is truly one of the guild’s hidden treasures! I think you will find her quilts both unique and inspiring.

Upcoming programs include an amazing trunk show by Carola Russell in October and the return of the popular “Garage Sale – Craft Fair” for November.

Help Us Plan Future Programs

Last meeting we handed out a questionnaire re program plans for 2014/2015. Thank you to all of those who returned these to us. The questionnaire is included in the newsletter this month and we would encourage you to complete it if you did not have an opportunity last month. Questionnaires can be left at the registration desk or be given to a member of the committee. Thank you. We look forward to your input.
